New gun owner, should i be familiar with lower dis/assembly?
I'm picking up my first gun in may, which will be the XD9, should i know before hand how to disassemble the lower portion of the gun, or when should i bother to learn? i already know how to take apart the top half and clean it and reassemble it and what not. which should be done after every range shooting, right? Now how about the lower half.. does that need to be cleaned after every range job or would i ever even need to disassemble the lower half? thanks for the info all!

I wouldnt worry about it just yet. In years of owning XDs I've never had to disassemble the frame once. If I had a serious problem I'd take it to a gunsmith. If you're interested in learning then sure, just make sure you carefully catalog what parts you've removed and where they originally went. - Ryan

You just need to know how to field strip it for now.

lol, I just started a thread about my expierience doing the first lower disasembly on my xd here is a link to a good set of videos YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.
I personaly do a field strip and clean after every time shooting, and since Ive put about 700 rounds I thought it would be good to do a more compleete take down. i did manage to get some extra dirt out. I think I will be doing this every 500 rounds or so (unless some one has a reason I should not do it as often, or I should do it more often.) |

I've shortened my standard cleaning reply to "service gun, cleaning, don't bother" lolol
Many thousands of rounds through my XD-9 no, none, never lower stripping, run a boresnake through the barrel and feedramp every few hundred rounds. I hose the brass shavings out of the rails when I see it build up ( rarely with the XDs but MUCH more so with my Sigs and CZs??? ).

Like others have said, don't worry about it until you need to do it. Do a basic field strip and clean whenever you feel necessary, but you shouldn't need to disassemble the lower for many thousands of rounds.

I went over 10,000 rounds in my XD9 Service with just an occasional basic cleaning. I never took it apart other than the standard field strip.

There is really no need to dis-assemble the lower unless you are replacing a part. Spray cleaners like non-chlorinated brake cleaner work well enough to remove almost anything that can cause you problems with the lower. Know how to dis-assemble the magazines as they will need cleaning once in a while and eventually you may have to clean the striker and the firing pin hole in the slide. That is about it the XD are very reliable and unless you are shooting very dirty powder require nothing but a field strip to clean.
