So can you generally assume that when you go to a gun shop you are getting the most recent version

Not necessarilly....

They aren't exactly rotated like food stocks in the grocery store.

Right now........ most likely you're getting a newer one, as they are selling well and don't sit around long. Unless you're looking at one of the less common models that a dealer may have had sitting there a while. I, personnally, haven't actually met anyone with a bi-tone, OD or DE XD yet, so I'm not sure how much or how often the local dealer would actually have them.

But any of the black 45's, 9mm's, and .40's sell fast, so likely you are getting a newer one. Or, just order it from the factory with a few options that you want and you can "pretty much" be assured that you are getting a new one.

Also, the safety is being added to .45's to make it competitive for military contracts. All the new big bores that you see coming out are being designed to meet the specs for the contract. Which, in reality, seems unlikely to actually happen.

Went to my dealer yesterday, he said that no dealers would get any of the 2008 models with thumb safeties and new colors until next year, this sounds odd to me.

I personally would not want the thumb safety. The gun already has the trigger and the grip safeties....good enough for carry....

There's no question in my mind that the United States spends too much on the military - whatever they're spending it on!!

To the original poster , I would NOT get the thumb-safety . An external safety will get you killed . You need something to go bang when you need it , you may forget to disengage the manual safety . I carry a Glock 22 on duty as a police officer and I am glad we have no manual safety's. This is just my $.02 . Try the XD without a manual safety , I have the XD-9 Service for my concealed carry weapon and love it . Awesome pistol.

When I first started looking at various pistols for my first handgun, one guy at a local dealer tried to steer me away from the XD because of the lack of manual safety (He wasn't aware of the new feature coming out in 2008. Said he had known of new shooters that had accidental discharges with glocks and XD's. I realized then this guy didn't know the differences between the glocks and XD's. I had done my own research and I felt that with the grip safety, the trigger safety, the internal striker block, there were enough mechanisms there that if I used my head I wouldn't get in trouble. Then the guy tried to sell me a used H&K for about 150 dollars more than I eventually paid for my XD new. I feel comfortable and safe handling and shooting the XD without the manual safety. I don't regret my decision to go with the XD.

Can you ask to see the original case and take a look at the date that the test fire happened?

I was surprised, but I had a shell casing inside of my box with a date of March for my new XD-45 w/ thumb safety.

Maybe that could be the way that you could tell for sure.
