Bluing is oxidizing the steel at high temperatures to form a high temperature form of iron oxide as opposed to low temperature oxide (rust). This provides a protective layer to resist rusting, however it is not a surface hardening treatment as is melonizing.

In melonizing, nitrogen and carbon are diffused into the surface of the steel itself from potassium and sodium cyanate and sodium carbonate salts and increases the hardness and fatigue strength by forming residual compressive stress in the surface of the steel for a few mils deep beneath the surface.

hmm
if it really bothers you, a Duplicolor Paint Pen would work to cover it up and prevent rust, or automotive clear coat. i personally have given up trying to keep my XD lookin brand new. Its a weapon and a tool just like my hammer. They only way not to scratch them is to not use them and i just cant do that.

I consider scratches to be like character.

My XD has a lot of character.

My Kahr has a little character.

Scratches also make it easier for me to distinguish my XD from another. Kinda like a remote alarm on a car. Besides, what fun would it be if they all looked the same?

Thanks for the concise explanation on the differences between bluing and Melonite/Tennifer treatments !!

i thought i had scratches on mine from my belt buckle but my buckle actually rubbed off on the slide. some gun oil and a piece of cotton scrubed it off.
but the xd and the glock finish are basically the same as long as you got a newer xd with the melonite. but any metal finish can be scratched even the GLOCK (dun dun dun!!! thats suposed to be music)
