It's a tool, not a trophy, use it and don't worry about the scratches. A pretty gun is one that is not properly used. Sorry, don't mean to sound grumpy about it, but a scratch is not going to cause it to fail. Use it for what it is intended.

When did springfield start using Melonite. I have an XD9 that was made in December 2004. I think it is pre Melonite.

I don't remember off of the top of my head, but I think yours IS pre-melonite.....no worries, My XD40 Service is pre-melonite, too, and I have had no issues.

I used to carry my XD 40SC inside the waisteband of my jeans and one day noticed scratches on the slide form the rivets on the watch pocket and it never rusted. I now keep her in a Supertuck. Some time in the near future I will send the slide to CCR-Refinishing and have it refinished in "HOUSE-BLACK" but I am not worried it will not rust Melonite is very tough.

Melonite and Tenifer are virtually the same thing; a nitrocarburizing process.

As Palmguy says Melonizing is a proprietary process of carbonitriding, or rather aerated salt bath nitriding which is a case hardening process that takes place around 1075 deg F. This improves wear and fatigue resistance and to some extent corrosion resistance. I don't believe it has much to do with the black finish. Wear the scratches with pride!

Dings, dents, scratches all add class to most guns. That is why tupper ware is invented. ( those evil black guns ) If you scratch the slide it is a badge of honor, so be PROUD.

But I am no expert in steel either =/

Almost right. As mentioned earlier, Melonite/Tennifer is a steel treatment process. It is not a coating or a finish. There's a difference. The black coating/finish on M&Ps and GLOCKs and XDs (and Walthers and HKs) is as prone to scratches as anything else, but the metal itself is more resistant to rusting due to the treatment process.

Think of it like this: If you put on Superman pajamas (finish), you can still get knocked out by Rocky at the diner. If you are actually Superman (treatment), Rocky is going to take a ride on the counter and end up on the pinball machine.
