Porting won't make the shooter more accurate, practice will. You also stated that you wanted to carry it, if you're carrying concealed I'd urge you to take a sub-compact to the range and try it out. I would simply advise you to not rule something out unless you've tried it.

P.S. +1 on the .40

+1 on the sub-compact. If I had to choose between my service and SC, I would take the SC, hands down.

I shoot a ported 9mm and it's great. A lot of guys who put down porting have not shot one. Use the ported barrel at the range and if you like you can get a standard (no ports) 9mm barrel from EFK and use the gun for defense.

I have to admit that the porting on the XD is quite functional and good looking.

I don't know much, but if you're going to do CCW, I think porting might be a problem.

If you're in a close-range self-defense situation, you might not be shooting from a locked-arm Weaver position with planted feet and good extension. You might be shooting from just above your holster, or even from retention with the pistol right against your body and your forearm out in front and off to the side.

In this situation, the ports are more likely to harm you during firing.

.40 SnW is a pretty tame round. If you're using a gun with a full-size grip like the .40 Service, (and believe me, that grip is wonderful. It's the most comfortable gun I've ever held) your recoil issues won't be that bad. It snaps a bit, but with a firm hold, it'll wind up right where you had it before you fired.

I'd say, pack lighter-weight defense rounds and get the non-ported, or go with the Sub-Comp in 9mm.

Of course, if the porting-burns phenom is all BS, don't yell at me. It's just what I've heard, and it kinda makes sense.

There's already been a discussion about ports:

Howdy,

The question is "Best All around?"

Springfield XD 4" service .40

I take it from what you have said, you have not fired an XD. The XD line has a very comfortable grip, and grip angle. The recoil is much more manageable with a XD than other makes out there. (<-general statement) With a XD 40 service, you will ahve your accuracy without problems. You will enjoy concealed carry with it, the .40 loads out there cover target, and self defense. Plus, you will not get night blindness from shots in the dark.
If you looking at target, then the porting might be better.

ill say it again about conversion barrels

difference between wwb 9mm and .40 is 5 bucks
barrel is $150 + shipping
its gonna take you 30+ boxes... 3000k+ rounds to break even

worth it?
not in my mind..
unless u shoot a butt load.. practice with what you might have to use.

practicing a wwb 9mm then getting into a situation and shooting some high power .40 hollows.. lets just hope u shoot as well

i suggest .40 service for carry...
its the best over all gun.. defense and range
12+1
ported ruins ur night vision / possible issues with shooting close to urself / dirty, especially with belly lint
.02

My two cents:

I bought a new XD40 Service last August and until last weekend had put only 32 rounds through it. Sunday we went into the woods and shot up about 50 rounds FMJ with it and a few more through my .357 Rossi. (In fact, I cut down a four inch tree with the pistol and revolver.) Accurate, recoil was no more noticeable than the 2 1/2 inch .357. This is the second .40 caliber I have had, and have shot 40's and 9mm's one after the other. Recoil even with the hotter loads in pistols doesn't seem to bother me for some reason.

I would vote for the 40. You will have more stopping power, plus the opportunity to convert to .357 Sig and 9mm with a barrel change if you want to got that route later.

Good advice on the .40!! the only thing is i am not a fan or ported pistols. they do send gunk and debris out the holes to. not a huge problem. but they are louder and a ton more muzzle flash. stick with the plain barren you will love it.
