I find this worrying a bit

I have 3 Springfield XD cable locks . . . they all use exactly the same key to open. While convenient, I find it kinda worrying.

The Key number is 030, wonder if it's the same for all SA guns that come with a cable lock.

I know the one that came with the XD 45 Service I just sold had a different key, but it wasn't like the current cable locks it was a thinner unwrapped cable

Even scarier than that:

I used one of the many gun locks that I have lying around on my locker at work (a yellow Ruger lock, I believe).

I ended up losing the key -So I grabbed the lock part, and gave it a quick yank...And What do you know!! It popped right open!!!

Hell, an 11 year old can defeat just about any gun lock there is!

If you want to keep it from the kids, just field strip the gun and leave it like that in the safe. That may be a bit extreme but kids safety comes first. That's what I would do.

The other option is just to leave it ready in the safe with a mag in but without one in the chamber.
If the kids are small enough, they won't know the safe combo and even if they knew, they wouldn't know or be able to physically rack the slide (XDs are tough in this regard).

This would be the best option for me. Better then using any gun lock, that's for sure.

I would also like to add the education is really important. I was taught since I was a kid to respect firearms and to be cautious when handling them. I was practically brainwashed with it and it's a good thing.

I could unlock your guns. My key is also #30. I don use the factory locks however. You should get some new ones that only you have the keys to.

The cable locks are not a solution and are as much a feel-good thing than anything else. If you need to make your gun safe, you are best to field strip is as suggested or invest is a release lock or vault.

Don't rely on the FREE cable locks to keep your loved ones safe.

the one that came with my xd40 xd45 and xd9 all service is the 030 so one key works for all 3 but we have no little kids at our house and everyone has at least on loaded gun in their room. all others besides selfdefence guns are locked in a safe

I have NEVER put one of those free locks on my guns. The locks stay in the plastic cases in the garage. The guns stay in various safes/lock boxes around the house. Some loaded and ready for SD, some not. Trigger/cable locks are worthless if you intend to have a gun ready for SD.

The free locks are there for one purpose really - the law. Manufactures are required to have a lock of some sort. They aren't truly safe or theft deterent.

Can you describe a scenario where you would be worried? IF someone comes to steal it they sure wont worry about the cable lock. If your kids find it you should already have all the gun lock keys in a place where they can't find it.

More worrisome to me is that SO many cars use the same ignition key. A low life family member of mine wrecked his car one night, got a lift to a major shopping mall and just walked around trying his key in car doors till he found one that fit and drove it away

Never bothered looking at my XD locks until now. I have two of them and they are both #30's as well.
