Considering going from .45 acp to 9mm

I have two semi autos in .45 acp and I'm considering going to 9mm with one of them. I'll never get rid of my 1911 my wife bought me, but I'm considering moving my XD45 compact to go for a 9mm solely for the reason for the price of ammo. I've considered reloading, but at the same time, I can reload 9mm even cheaper than reloading .45 acp. I haven't started reloading due to the initial investment in supplies and equipment. The wife and I are working on knocking out some debt to better position ourselves for buying a house sometime soon.

I have no issues concealing the XD45c, but at the same time, I could go with an XD9sc or a Kahr MK9/PM9 something even smaller. I was also considering an XD9 service and doing a grip chop.

Is anyone else just not surprised, but kind of shocked at where the price of ammo has gone? I was in a shop today and the owner told me he saw a 9% increase across the board on all ammo from his distributors. I saw basic run of the mill .30-30 ammo going for over $22/box for 20 rounds.

We all know the legislators are going after ammo, so...what is there to do about it since the ammo keeps going up in price?

I shoot both, but 9mm more than .45ACP for the reasons you mentioned.

I wish I had picked up a PM9 a long time ago or even a J-Frame 38+p is still pretty close to 9mm in performance.

I don't really ever want to sell/trade a gun to get another, but $31/100 before any recent increases is still ridiculous. I just don't like going to the range and dumping $60 on ammo and not being there all day.

I really should/(need to) get a semi auto .22 to really feed my trigger happy time.

I, too, own a 45 ACP and a 9mm. I have the XD45 Tactical and a Glock 26 (ultra-compact) 9mm. I tend to shoot the 9mm a little bit more for the reasons that you mention.

I like the G26 because I essentially have two guns in one. With the straight G26, I have an ultra-compact, easily concealable 9mm with a 10+1 round capacity. If disappears nicely in my Crossbreed Super-Tuck holster. If I want higher capacity, I can insert a 15+1 round G19 mag (with an adapter sleeve) and, voila, I've got a G19.

You may want to consider an XD9sc or G26 (you should be able to find a decent used one).

I've reloaded for years with a Dillon Precision SDB (Square Deal B). I've loaded literally thousands of rounds with barely an issue (okay, I've had a spring break every several thousand rounds). You may want to consider a used Dillon. They come with a lifetime guarantee. So, even if you bought is used, it would be guaranteed.

Regarding your comment about legislators going after ammo. However, I don't think the current price has much to do with the Chuck Schumer's of the world. I believe that it has more to do with supply and demand. World demand of copper, brass and even lead has caused the metals markets to soar. As such, the cost of ammo has gone up. I've been stocking up on reloading supplies now while the prices are still "reasonable". I suspect that they will only go up.

.38 special really isn't much, if at all, cheaper than .45 acp and I prefer the semi auto. I do plan on getting a .357 revolver at some point, but that's down the road.

I like the MK9 as it's all steel and still controllable in 9mm for the size and not getting a full grip, but even with having an all steel build, it's still lighter than my XD45 compact. 22 ounces vs. 29 ounces...I believe the PM9 is around 14 ounces. I fondled an MK9 today and the double action only was a bit long, as was the reset, but it was sooooo smooth.

The ammo prices now are up due to supply and demand, but I don't see them going down with how many attacks directed at ammunition.

I'm also trying to help the wife figure out what she wants as her carry piece since she got her permit probably a month ago.

every body knows that a 45acp is going to be better in most if not all situations for self defense compared to 9mm if you compare equal number of shots but you get more 9mms out of the same sized gun and i know alot of people are going to bring up that you get 13 45 in the xd and only 3 extra out of the xd9 but they are not the same sized gun the xd45GAP is the same sized gun so its 9 rounds of 45.caliber bullets compared to 16 9mms.

well i would rather have a 40 but i would carry 9mm without any worries or feeling "out gunned" with modern JHP bullets a 9mm is plenty powerful factory +p ammo is relatively easy to find and a great performer

What guns are you thinking about and for what primary purpose?

I wish that was all I paid for ammo.

Where I am, the exchange rate is 2.8 to 1.

Remington UMC 9mm goes for 72 local dollars for 50 rds = $25.72

.40 is 10 local more = 29.28

Can't get .45 here.

Now, I usually buy re-loads for 50 local dollars = $17.85

Still feel like you pay too much for ammo?
