Slide won't close when loading +1
Hey Everybody,
I dug around and can't find a post on this, recently I have become more confident carrying cocked and loaded (+1 of course), but here is my dilema on both my XD9 and my XD40. When I lock the slide open and insert a round in the chamber, when I release the slide while holding it back (so it doesn't slam closed), the slide doesn't close all the way and I have to smack the back of the gun with my palm to close it. Is this normal? Am I ok to just release the slide and let it slam closed? Can I let it slam close without a round in there? I would appreciate any input. T |

Try loading the mag to capacity. Then (at slide-lock) load the mag, and release the slide. That will load the first round. Eject the mag, and load another round into it. Then, slap the full mag in. You should be good to go.

Lock slide to rear. Insert full mag into pistol. Let slide slam closed chambering the top round off of the mag. If you wish ... remove mag and top off with another round and insert in pistol. Not a good idea to do it any other way and not a good idea to let a slide slam closed without a mag in the pistol with a round or more in the mag.

I would imagine this is happening because the extractor is not sliding around the part of the shell it latches onto because you are not letting the slide "slam home". I wouldn't load plus one like this ever. Letting the slide slam home could potentially cause a slam fire form what I have heard. Doing it your way is causeing the round to not be loaded properly. Why didn't you load it from the magazine the way the gun was designed to work? Then drop the mag to top it off.

Its supposed to slam closed....plus one on the extractor not slipping around the rim.

Releasing the slide and letting it "slam" the round home is part of the normal cycle of fire. The pistol is designed to let the slide travel under full spring tension so gently releasing the slide onto the round is why you are having to tap it shut. Slamfiring with an XD is not possible due to the striker system and all of the safety features involved with the design. However, it is probally better on the mechanism if you allow the slide to scoop your +1 round off of a loaded magazine, then refill the round onto the magazine. This would also help to prevent dropping the round out of the empty magwell while trying to fit it in to the chamber or having to dig a round out of the grass or dirt because it fell out of the chamber before closing the slide.

Cuz I wasn't thinking outside the box bro!!! Great input, excellent posts, that is what makes this board the number one place to hang. I am going to go with lock the slide, insert the mag, slam it home and fill er up.. T |
