Brother, you're on to something there......

Mmmmm, the SA XD Operator. That has "Super Cool Guy" written all over it.

I can see it now.........it'll be available with a 15 million candle power spotlight, like the ones you see in auto parts stores.

I think SA Marketing chose "Tactical" because "A Little Longer" didn't quite have the same panache'!

Target would have been more descriptive. But not nearly as cool, and it's all about image.

From Going over to the Dark Side - The Springfield Armory XD-9 Tactical Pistol :
Quote:
“Tactical” is such a cool word. It is an adjective that refers to some aspect of tactics. Tactics are actions and strategies, not things. But, today, we have tactical boots, tactical shirts, tactical lights, tactical… It’s as if the gun and accessory makers don’t believe they can sell something unless it is called “tactical.” If present trends continue, we will have tactical cat food and armchairs before very long. Perhaps some enterprising soul could come up with a line of tactical lingerie for the ladies, featuring lots of ballistic nylon, Kevlar, and Velcro. Is the XD-9 Tactical “tactical”? Well, it has the now obligatory accessory rail for lights and laser sights, but even the sub-compact XD has that. The XD-9 Tactical is black, but so is my mouse. Black is the official color of “tactical.” Perhaps, I have a “tactical” mouse. The XD-9 has high-capacity magazines, but so does every other autoloader sold since the AWB went the way of the dodo. The characteristic which defines the “Tactical” model for Springfield is that the barrel is 5” long. It is true that some SF, SWAT and MEU types prefer 5” barreled pistols for their increased muzzle velocity and perceived reliability. Does a five inch barrel make a pistol “tactical”? I don’t know, but the pistol definitely has the look.

I believe you hit the nail on the head. My SC goes with me every where the Tac only goes to the range.

Actually the term "tactical" comes from its designed use. The standard length sidearm for most law enforcement use is a 4" weapon, because the length is a bit easier to carry. However with the development of SWAT and special operations unit came the need for a gun with a longer sight radius and something that probably wasn't going to be carried all the time. Most of these "tactical" teams decided to use the 5" 1911 as their side arm of choice. therefore, the 5" guns became known as "Tactical" to differentiate them from the more common 4" "Service" weapon.

Of course this ignores the fact that many LEOs had carried full-sized 1911s for a good many years. However, if you check you will quickly realize that when PDs made the switch from revolvers, which were almost always 4", to semi-autos they stayed with the 4" length. The 5" weapon was the weapon of choice for those who were more into guns and could make use of the longer sight-radius, plus the only 5" semi-autos available for many years was the 1911 in 45acp. Which as everyone knows is much too powerful a handgun for anybody but the most experienced user.

"Tactical"

A marketing tool whereby manufacturers can save money by eliminating the costly labor of a nicely polished finished weapon and instead, leaving it rough, coloring it black and raising the selling price, because it is now "Tactical."

A "win-win" profit situation.....

It's Tactical because strategic doesn't make sense.

SWAT guys need a longer pistol sight radius, because the sight radius on their ARs, MP5s, and shotguns is so short.
