I haven't put my paws on one yet, but I'd like to think it's similar to how the 1911 thumb safety works...use it as a rest for the thumb.

SA says they specifically copied it as close as they could to a 1911 so you could rest your thumb on it.

Cloning the 1911 safety is nice. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that the XD needs another safety, but if SA is going to offer one I am glad that used a 1911 style clone.

As well I haven't touched it yet, but I wanna....

On a side note I think the "option" of an additional external safety will increase the sales and enhance peoples interest in it. There are several people that I know who like my XD but didn't like not having that external safety. Now it will appeal to all crowds. Those that want an external safety and those who understand how the integral safeties work.

No, and there would be a huge pissing match if they did.

The thumb safety is cute but utterly superfluous. If you're into that sort of thing, knock yourself out! If you're pragmatic like me, you wonder "what's the point."

I had my hands on one after I got done shooting the range at my gunshop Monday and again today and I must say I really do like it,but again it only is made in 45acp.Next time I go there shooting I will check to see if they have one to rent and give it a try.

The guys at the Local Shop are selling it as the "Modern 1911" Makes sense i guess. Except for that whole USA trigger deal. And the Plastic. And the capacity. And its Croatian.
