Does a ported XD lose muzzle velocity?
The title pretty much says it. If you vent your charge after moving about 1/3 of the way down the barrel, aren't you going to have a slower round? Or is it already done accelerating and the rest of the barrel is there for stability? Anyone know muzzle velocity of a service vs a V-10?

Yes, there is loss of muzzle velocity.
No, it is not significant in the grand scheme of things.

So what's the other 2.5 inches of barrel for? Why go for a tactical if you get nearly all the oomph you need after an inch and a half of barrel?

So, how is it then that a tactical would be more accurate? Of course, we all know that they are, but why? The pitch of the rifling never changes, so the round isn't going appreciably faster or spinning any faster. Surely it doesn't come out of a shorter barrel crooked !! Is it just to add mass to the weapon so it's not as influenced by recoil? I had always assumed that the round is accelerating all the way down the barrel, but now that I'm told that's not really the case, I just don't see what a long barrel gets you.

A short barrel is no less accurate than a long barrel. A longer barrel gives you a longer sight radius which makes it easier to shoot accurately.
