Is the disassembly lever in the vertical (12 o'clock) position?

If I understand your hang-up, try pulling the trigger as you move the slide back into position

My very first question are you pressing the grip safety??? You have to have the grip safety depressed in order rack the slide. If that's not the problem do a search on your problem. If that doesn't help call SA. I've never had to call them about my XD but I've heard that they have awesome customer service.

I was going to say the same thing, If that grip safety isn't FULLY depressed the slide wont pull back.

Ensure the guide rod spring is "centered" on the barrel. I had a similar problem happen to me the other night. The guid rod was off center and the slide jammed. I pulled on the end of the guide rod that was sticking out of the slide near the muzzle and the slide popped back loose. I wouldn't slide on or off at first.

Grip safety has to be on to get the slide to move on or off, also to get the slide off you have to have the trigger pulled. Thats probably the problem, if not, call SA. And I do hope that you have the takedown pulled up. If not read the manual!
