Question about custom guides and springs

I'm not very well versed in all the customizations that can be done to pistols. I am wondering exactly what the benefit of having custom guide rods and springs put into a pistol are? Softer recoil? I see that many offer different pound springs. What do the different pounds mean?

Also, does a stainless steel slide require less maintainance than a blued slide? What is the benefit of the stainless slide (other than looking pretty...)

Just a matter of preference. Many shooters of 1911s regularly swap out springs to modify the feel of recoil, i personaly use a captive guid rod system. But thats a personal choice and my comfort level.
