Good reason. It isn't hard to give a legitimate reason. There are a lot. I was in your shoes when I owned a bar. I always closed the place up at ungodly hours and it was almost an all cash business. I can relate.

Just because you put a peice of paper in front of someone doesn't mean they will actually read it or understand it before they sign it. You are going to have to go to the politicians and ask for more and stricter gun control laws to get it the way YOU think it needs to be.

BTW I didn't notice in your rant if you mentioned why YOU carry, oh wait you carry to go to unfamiliar places, simple fix don't go to unfamiliar places and then you don't need your CCW. Sounds like you got yours because you could, for the times you go to unfamiliar places and don't feel comfortable.

Everyone has there own reasons why, whether or not they tell you why or elaborate enough to satisfy you or any of us is there perogative and it is not any of our places to tell them it is not a good enough reason for them to have a permit.

I'd rather have a sheet with big block letters that will sink into SOME minds than having complicated and unwanted and needless gun control laws.

So it may not mean ****, but I can't see a downside. If I owned a gun store I would (and I would have the right to) spend two minutes going over basic safety with buyers. If that's too much for them to tolerate, then they could take their business elsewhere. Just as when I owned a bar I could (and was morally and legally obligated to cut someone off if I had reason to believe they were a danger to themselves or anyone else), I could make my own rules. Anyone who isn't interested enough in two minutes of safety instruction....well something is wrong IMO.

I should not go to unfamiliar places? You don't know me. That's my main joy in life. I am a traveler and I like adventures. I have been stopped at remote borders by armies. Traveling is my thing. Mostly SE Asia. Twenty five years ago, it was Eastern Europe. Anyplace different.

If I could carry a gun in those places, I definitely would. I can't, but I go anyway. I feel less safe without a gun, but I'm not missing out because of fear. I'm going anyway. When I can carry a gun in unfamiliar places, I will. I don't feel like I need to carry to get from my home to my office. All of a 8 minute commute from one garage to another. We all have the right to decide for ourselves as long as we play by the rules.

As for your last comment....I agree. But if someone does not want to say why they carry a gun, why not just say nothing? Why say "because I can"? We already know that. It adds nothing and it makes it sound like an idiotic response (IMO) for the reasons I stated. But I said my piece once. If you disagree, I have no problem. This is supposed to be a discussion board. "Because I can" is not participating in a discussion. It's a worthless response. If you feel differently, that's fine too. I just gave my opinion. Anyone's right to ignore, disagree with, argue with, agree with, think worthless or worthwhile. Just words on an anonymous message board. No more, no less..

Hey D, I think any thread you participate in, your posts are longer than the rest of the ones combined! That said, I've enjoyed reading everyone's takes. I applied for my CPL earlier this month and am waiting for it now. I agree with the "insurance" reason for carrying, personally. I hope that I'll never be given a reason to have it... but if I am, I'll be glad I have it.

Hey, I've plead guilty for being long winded. What else can I do? I don't know how to say a lot with very few words like OEFM. Wish I could. Of course no one needs to read what I write.

Other than one or two people here, we all hope we never have a reason to need a gun (other than they are fun to shoot at inanimate targets).

I carry because I am a truant officer/school safety specialist with a fairly large public school system. I have police powers to perform my job and I do make arrests and serve warrents. I am also involved in doing street gang education and interdiction in my area. Over the years I have been threatened on a regular basis. I have made my fair share of enemies and many of the folks I deal with are involved in gangs, drugs, and other criminal offenses. I also respond to my schools at night, now and then, when an alarm is going off.

I also carry because things have simply changed. It used to be that if someone robbed a store it was at three in the morning. Now you never know when and where something will happen. It could be at three in the afternoon while I am there. You may do exactly what they say and still get hurt. Working very closely with the courts and LEOs, I am very aware of what goes on in our community.

I carry because the use of meth in my area is rising drasticly and you never know what someone tweeked out on this stuff will do.

I carry because despite their best efforts, by the time the LEOs show up, things will probably be over. This is not in any way, shape, or form their fault. I have many LEO friends and they are just spread too thin and have too much to do. And when something does happen it unfolds and is over very quickly, in most cases.

And most importantly, I carry because I have a wife and two wonderful daughters and come hell or high water, no one will harm them!!!!
