The XD is correctly classified as a single-action design, meaning it is fully cocked by racking the slide....The XD is a true single-action internally...The XD is a single-action design in that the trigger does not cock the striker.

The XD is a single action, it's just set up with a combat style trigger, not a match 1911 trigger. The striker is always cocked if there is a round in the chamber. When the slide cycles, it cocks the striker. The trigger pull just drops the sear and releases the striker.

It's not a long pull, there is just some take up. Once you get through the take up, which is very light, the actually trigger pull to drop the sear is pretty decent. Aftermarket parts are available to make the trigger very sweet.

The current finish is Melonite and is very similar to the Glock finish. Don't soak it in salt water and you shouldn't have trouble.

The XD has a better trigger, but Glocks can be tweaked pretty well too. The XD trigger "feel" is what people generally prefer, which is a very light take up and then a well defined break point. The stock Glock is just a long, stacking feel that builds and releases without a definitive break point. Most people hate that because you can't stage the trigger.

The slide features a spring-loaded claw extractor and the stamped sheet-metal extractor is pinned to the trigger housing. The striker firing mechanismhas a spring-loaded firing pin that is cocked in two stages, powered by the firing pin spring. When a the weapon is charged, the firing pin is in the half-cock position. As the trigger is pulled, the striker is fully cocked. At the end of its travel, the trigger bar is tilted downward by the disconnecter, releasing the striker to fire the cartridge. The disconnecter also resets the trigger bar so that the striker will be captured in half-cock at the end of the firing cycle. This is known as a pre-set trigger mechanism, referred to as the "Safe Action" trigger by the manufacturer. The disconnecter also ensures the pistol can only fire in semi-automatic mode

Action Profile: Inside The XD

The XD is correctly classified as a single-action design, meaning it is fully cocked by racking the slide. Most single-action autos have manual safeties, but the XD's Croatian designers eliminated the need for such safeties by adopting the Glock-type trigger safety as well as an internal firing-pin block. They also added a grip safety. The XD is a very safe design, but its single-action designation has confused some.

The Glock has never been classified as a single action gun while the early XD had to struggle with how to classify them for competition. When the powers that be finally settled on the XD being a single action only gun it too them out of the running for many military and civil contracts while the Glock was able to bid being classified in the DA category. Those that wonder why there are not more police using XDs, this is why.

Hence the reason, in my opinion, why we're seeing the thumb safety available now...

I agree, but you also have to take Glock's marketing techniques with law enforcement, they practically give their guns away. I have mixed feelings about the thumb safety meeting the requirement of many municipal law enforcement agencies. I'm just not sure that HS Produkt has the capacity to supply all of the current customers and begin a large give away campaign to law enforcement, that might severely limit the availability of weapons to private buyers. That means fewer guns and longer waits for me. I'm not a very patient person.

There is some dispute as to what qualifies as a "single action" gun: in reality, it is any gun which has a SINGLE firing mode, in other words it has a "single action". The original distinction between SA and DA was for the old revolvers: initially all revos were SA which required tha hammer be cocked to fire. The new design DA guns had this same mode and also the "straight pull" mode where the trigger cocked the hammer and dropped it. Thus they were named "double action" because the new action type had two different fire modes.

Glocks may have ducked the SA name for various political reasons to keep them on the "happy list" to get qualified for service use, but they are still a single action gun. They are not the same style of single action as many other single action autoloading guns (which remain cocked in their carry state), but Glocks are still SA. Anybody who disputes that, please show evidence of the "second" action mode a Glock can use to fire itself. If it has only one, that is SINGLE.

Any true double action pistol has two modes of fire. One is the "long pull" where the hammer is cocked by the trigger, and the other is the "short pull" where the hammers is cocked by the slide and the trigger pull releases it.

I think you definition of double and single action is a little off because there is also DAO Double Action Only, which is I believe what Glock claims. I remember when this battle first took place KOL is right this is a dead horse and we have to give Glock credit for the best use of loop holes in gun industry. They have been well rewarded for it.
