Here's mine, does it look like this? It has about 700 rounds through it since it was last cleaned. I want to see how much it can take.

Yep, that's what mine looked like. My cousin was interested in getting a gun for target shooting and home defense and I was showing him my XD, doing a rather good sales pitch, and I was showing him how easy it was to take apart and such, and then I noticed it was squeaky clean... and I became sad.

That is powder residue, you will notice that the extractor is way forward of the debris so it is not brass being pulled of the bullet case. Actually that is not bad at all. What you see it the photo is blow by usually cause by the cartridge case not expanding enough to seal against the chamber wall. This is very common with straight walled cartridges like those used in the XDs. Though blow by is not harmful in itself if the residue is allowed to build up it will effect the guns operation and eventually cause malfunctions. Simple solution is to clean the gun before the residue build up gets too heavy.

ive only seen unburned powder once and it was only one little flake.(but i cant remember which gun it was) i allways used to shoot WWB but i oil my guns VERY lightly. i used to put lots of oil every where but all that does is attract carbon and other junk. i will oil everything every now and then and let it sit and then wipe it down

That's EXACTLY what mine looks like after shooting/before cleaning. I've talked to a few of my "gun guy" friends, and the general concensus is what everybody here is saying........unburned powder residue due to the smaller barrel length.
No worries here.
