Department Looking at Springfield XD's; Need help!
I had originally asked for help on GLock Talk, but got referred to you guys here. So here it goes...
The police department for which I work just got in some Springfield XD demo pistols at the range. They are being considered for being added to our approved weapons list, and I have been asked to go out and help test. To be honest, I'm a little excited. I am familiar with the (albeit short) history of the XD, and its transition from being the HS2000. I've also been eyeing the Springfiled XD Tactical model since it came out, but have held off because I couldn't carry it on duty. I have also been asked to dig up any info that I can on the XD pistols. I'm looking around, but I was hoping that some of the people here could help me out too. Any good information that I can use to help swing the tide in favor of the XD is being sought. Thanks in advance for any info/help given. |

How about picking up the June 2005 issue of Handguns Magazine and showing the powers-that-be, the 20K round torture test done to a bone stock XD-9? That ought to show them the durability and reliability of the XD series.
Other than that, I'd say handling one and shooting one, right after handling/shooting the Glock 17 ought to convince anyone that the XD is a more comfortable piece. Did you also mention SA's lifetime warranty? Good luck...I am betting the XDs make it into lots of LEO's holsters as time goes by. (BTW, What dept are you with? What part of TX?) -Brickboy240

What caliber is the dept. looking at?
If 9mm is accepted, I doubt you will find anyone with anything bad to say about their gun(s). I personally have purchased 3 9mm tacticals, and a ported 40 cal model. Between the 4 of them, in the last 8 months I have put nearly 5k rounds through them. The only problem I had was not w/ the gun, but rather the magazines. In competition, I frequently drop magazines that are half full and when they hit the ground, they sometimes bend. As a result I was having some feed issues. Corrected the magazines, and the gun ran like a champ again. I personally have encountered a problem w/ the grip safety do to a slightly modified grip that I have to use to compensate for a nerve damage problem in my gun hand, but it seems no one else has. Most of the feed issues I've heard of come from the 40 cal users and I think that it frequently has something to do w/ magazine there as well. The finish problem is no worse than any other blued (black oxided steel) gun would encounter, it's just that these days polymer guns are touted as being low maintenance so people think they can forget the basics of oiling/cleaning on a reg. basis regardless of use. Apparently Mec-Gar is tooled up to make some stouter magazines for OEM and after market. If they do, good. I'll probably be one of the first in line for a couple to try out. Good luck in winning them over, but make sure you do a test case run w/ their customer service to see how they handle you before making a final decision. I suspect issues over SA's LE cust serv. is what is causing some of the transitions back to glock.

txleapd,
I'm the guy who wrote the 20,000 round "torture test" article for the June/July issue of Handguns Magazine. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help out. PM me or answer this post. --Leibster

How about contacting SA? I am sure that they have a LE division that probably has a whole lot of reasons why the XD should be approved.

Me and my buddies XD40 are both jam-o-matics. I would shy away from them.

I have an xd 40 with over 3,000 rnds through it and never have I had any problems of any kind. Its also one of the most comfortable and accurate guns I've ever shot.I would not trade my XD for anything. I would trust my life to it, and if it were small and light enough to carry concealed daily I would. I'm just not the type to carry full size autos.

I have a service .40 and it has about 8k rounds through it already and you know what, not a single problem. best gun ive ever owned. so just because 2 people have a problem with theirs is no reason to "stay away". .40 .357 and 9mm are all good guns, its an xd in any caliber.
