Hey everyone -

I absolutely love my XD9 and I want to make a few mods in it's appearance and need some advice.

I personally don't like the look of the black parts that are worn (grip safety, trigger, barrel, etc) and would like to strip the paint/coating off to reveal a nice silver metal to match my slide (bi-tone). However, I'm concerned about corrosion and was curious if there was a coating/sealant that you recommended for this purpose. I guess I want it both - the looks and the protection. I could just buy a match grade barrel and that would take care of the barrel...

Any advice is welcome!

best bet would be to get it hard chromed very durable and very corrosion resistant and will give you that silver finish

Can I use clear duracoat? Will that work for a non-prefessional like myself?

I figure I can do some wet sanding (600 grit, 1000 grit, 2000 grit, polish) to get it to the stage where it could use a clear coating...

It's this pic that made me interested in this - it looks great!

I don't know of any clear coats that will withstand the abuse of acetone cleaners like Gunscrubber. It's the same problem with clearcoats for motorcycle gas tanks that have to stand up to gasoline. The coatings are usually some kind of catalyzing epoxy that has a muti-part mix you blend then it cures with heat. Not sure if it is avaialable for guns, I think it would be more trouble than it's worth.

I also recommend hard chrome for a beautiful silver finsih that is tough to hurt.

i polished my barrel and a few other parts and i have had no problems with rust but then again i take really good care of my guns

John Norrell Arms also makes a clear coat.

That's my son's XD.

Htown had his XD done in Tripp Research's hard chrome and the barrel is an EFK firedragon which is all stainless not polished.

I stripped some of my XD parts and polished them, and I figure as long as I keep everything cleaned and oiled on a regular basis there shouldn't be a problem. I even completely stripped the slide on my FEG and that has yet to show any signs of rust. It is nice to know there is that clear coat posted earlier though in case there is a problem.

I buffed off the black finish of the small parts you are talking about (pins, slide release, magazine release, trigger, backstrap safety, etc...). I then coated them in Moly Resin clear coat. It's a bake on product that is self lubricating and impervious to most "bad things" like rust, salt water damage, stuff like that.
For moving parts such as these that go through routine metal-to-metal friction, its a highly superior choice compared to DuraCoat. DuraCoat is good, but not for fruction surfaces.

Do a search online for Norell's Moly Resin. If you've got an oven and a cheap airbrush, you're in business
