I have both. Availability is not the issue so much as price. The ammo for the XD9 is much less expensive.

I've got both, too, be it in the 5" model.
The decision on caliber is totally dependant on what you want to do with the gun... competition, shooter, defense, etc. For defense a lot will say go with the 45. For just plain old range shooting, it doesn't really matter other than ammo costs and whichever you are more comfortable with. Remember 1 box of 9mm is about 1/2 to 2/3 the price of a box of 45. For competition, I find the 45 is more accurate and controlable due to the slower (even if more powerful) muzzle rise. The 9mm (all 9mm's IMHO) are light but snappy I find.

xd9 bi-tone
9mm ammo will more than likely always be less expensive than the 45 auto round. |

I agree, if just for shooting fun the 9mm is much cheaper to shoot.
For defense I'd choose a .45 A 250 round box of Rem UMI is $<50 for 9mm $>80 for .45 apc (swill-mart) For both, .45

Go with the .45, if you ever have any intent on the gun being used for self defense. Otherwise, as others have said, the 9mm is less expensive to shoot.
That said: From shot show-XD .22 conversion kit available in late 2007 Indicates (eventually) we'll see a 22lr conversion kit for the XD45, it's obviously been delayed (I don't know how long, search might pull up something) - but that'd let you shoot something cheap at the range, and still have the versatility of the .45. If you can, try them both and pick the one you shoot best. Both are excellent weapons for whatever you want to do, range, competition or defense.

cost isnt that much diff maybe ? 3-4 per box, just depends on what you wantto do , if its just go bang bang at paper then id say 9mm , if you wantto use it for defense or other heavier use then 45, i got both in many different length's , you will to in time hahahah

While the price difference for ammo may only be $3-$4 per box, that can add up very quickly if you shoot a fair amount. If you shoot a box a month, sure....it's only $4 more so no biggie.
That being said, I recently picked up an XD9. It is the cheaper alternative to my shooting my XD45 all the time. Same platform to practice with....so that works well for me. I'll take that $4 a box savings any time.

Use .45 for selfdefense and 9mm if you only want to use it at the range or fun plinking, or shooting squirrels, or shooting gophers, but do NOT, I repeat, do NOT use 9mm for selfdefense: you will most likely, as a civilian be fighting against Special ops criminals wearing bulletproof vests and 9mm would just piss them off.
