Frangible ammo

In my owner's manual it says that I can't shoot frangible ammo from my xd45. Is there a reason for that, or does Springfield just not like it? One of the course I'm considering taking requires frangible ammo.

Hmmmm, I shot it in my 9mm all the time. If you can't, I would have to buy a different gun, shot a lot of indoor stuff that requires it. Practice makes perfect.

I believe their biggest concern is with shot load (snake loads) which don't chamber well and won't cycle the slide.

I thought the restriction was for ported barrels only.

Frangible ammo is extremely hard on barrels. Learned this when I was able to spend a day with Rob Leatham last Fall, he learned it the hard way. Even as much shooting as he does a barrel will keep match accuracy for close to 10,000 rounds. He had a new barrel in one of his match guns and it was shot out in 2000 rounds. He now uses an old barrel whenever he shoots demos where he has to use frangible ammo.

Let me say this, he did say most people would not notice the difference. His standard is much higher than most of us. For him a barrel is shot out when it will no longer group into 3" at 50 yards, hand-held not from a Ransom Rest.

The advantage of frangible ammo is it is lead-free, it is powder copper or brass held together with a special glue. The down-size is it is very expensive and not known for its accuracy. It is designed really for use in small enclosed ranges, such as many LEOs use, where most of the shooting is done at 7 yards, or less. It is also good for demos because it turns to powder as soon as it hits anything relatively solid. This makes it great for demos because it means people watching a demo and the demonstrator can be quite close to each other, and the targets, making communications much easier.

BTW it is not the same as snake loads which are shells loaded with shot and covered with a plastic sleeve.

I do not believe this is considered a frangible ammo for ranges is it?

Why exactly does/would frangible ammo wear out a barrel quicker? My instructors said that it was made of Zinc...I didn't/don't know any differently...Zinc is soft, no?
