Newby With a Question
The owners manual for my XD .40 describes the loading procedure as racking the slide back, dropping the empty magazine, inserting a full one, then releasing the slide to chamber a round. What if you don't want to chamber a round? Is there any problem if you just insert a loaded mag and don't put one in the pipe? Before anyone says why do you want to carry without a round in the chamber, Two reasons, I am carrying it around the house to break in a new leather holster, and I want to get a little more acclimated to the gun before I start to carry it that way.
On a side note, since I bought the gun I visit this site daily and have learned quite a lot. Thank you all. One more thing, I have been scouring the internet trying to find the XD accessory kit with the three hi-cap mags. No one seemed to have any left. Luckily for me, I found an Army Navy store in MN that had one left for $45 which I snagged right up! |

Inserting a full mag without chambering a round won't cause any problems. Just make sure and give the mag base a good slap to ensure that it is seated all the way since the slide is already in battery.

That's fine. It won't hurt the gun in any way.

I don't see a problem with inserting a loaded mag with nothing in the chamber. I've also heard it suggested that when you are trying to get used to carrying around a gun with one in the chamber, you can use a snap cap in the chamber insted of a live round. That way the gun is still "loaded" but not with a live round.

It's a matter of personal preference. I carry with one in the chamber though.

I carry with one in the chamber... When I draw it to defend myself and family it's ready to go. If I leave the chamber empty it takes extra thought and time to load it.... in my opinion its to late then. To draw and chamber a round takes 3-4 seconds for me... while drawing and firing is under 2 seconds. In a situation 3-4 seconds is 7-20 yds if a BG was running toward you. Just my 2 cents. Good luck...

For just breaking in your new holster, its not a big deal that you don't have a round chambered.
As for will it effect the gun in any way, think of it like your doing 13+1, and the +1 is in the chamber. The common way to load the +1 is to put a mag in, drop the slide, pull the mag out/switch to a full mag. Then re-insert a full mag. In this case it would be just the same as just keeping a full mag in the gun. Hope that clarifies any confuion.
