You are all leaving out the most important piece of the defensive ammunition/cartridge puzzle, and that is expansion.
There is no such thing as "knockdown power." If a cartridge had enough power to knock down a BG, it would also knock down the person shooting it. Its simple physics. Any action has an equal and opposite reaction. If you have ammo in 9mm, 40 S&W and 45acp, the ammo which will create the largest permanent wound channel will be the most effective. The largest wound channel does two things: A) It increases the likelihood of hitting a vital organ or large blood vessel B) Provides a larger wound for the subject to bleed from. Incapacitation will occur from one of two things, a central nervous system (brain or spinal column) hit or lack of blood getting to the brain. In the first senario, a .22 will work if it hits in exactly the right place. In the second, a larger wound channel will expidite matters. So, take a combat situation, where your fine motor skill have gone to crap, both you and the BG are moving and fighting for your lives; if you can line up your sights, control your breathing and trigger squeeze, then go for that one shot stop to the head. More power to you. But if you are human like the rest of us, carry the biggest gun in the largest caliber you can shoot accurately and aim for center mass.

I just got my 45 Tac and I thought the most practicle place to carry it would be in a sholder holster. Has anyone tried any other place to carry it? I know its pretty massive to even think about carrying it, but my neighborhood is pretty shady and we have weekly break-ins and muggings. I'm asking because, as posted earlier, summer is comming.

I found the recoil very light in my sc especially compared to my J frame .38. The sc has a lighter/shorter trigger pull and the flip is also marginal. I find the sc to be much more accurate. I realize this thread is about .45 vs .40... just a comment on relative recoil with what I own. I don't like IWB... just don't. The double stack makes it worse. I carry concealed when I tour cross country on a motorcycle so needs are a little different. I just picked up a 511 tactical holster undershirt and tried it with both the J frame and the sc... I love this thing and the quality is top notch. A friend of mine bought one for his XD 45... he likes it too. It's deeper than an IWB or OWB but lifting a T shirt and cross drawing is near effortless. The shirt supports the weight of the gun and their is no flop if the shirt fits snug (as it should). Their are pockets on each side so extra mags are easy too. Probably not the best thing for a surprise attack, but for my purposes, I'm hoping it will fill the bill. now back to the regularly scheduled and endless caliber debate...

If you have managed to get yourself surrounded by 16 bad guys, you should stay at home for you are a danger to yourself and others. Perhaps you need professional help.

shoulder holster mostly, sometimes the crappy xdgear belt slide...once in a great while i'll just gangsta style it in the waistband.
trying to find a comfortable iwb holster right now though when summer rolls around though...probably be looking a lot harder at the Ruger LCP or a Kel-Tec P3AT |

I carry the XD45 Service in an IWB Uncle Mikes Side Kick Size 5 holster at the 3:30 or 4:00 position. I wear a jacket or unbuttoned shirt to conceal the firearm. This setup is comfortable for me and I will wear the XD all day.
As for caliber, all of the XD chamberings are viable for self defense. You need to use a caliber/firearm that you can accurately fire and if you are looking at taking on 5 or more bad guys at a time, you are way to far over your head. If you are comfortable with the XD45, find a holster clothing setup that will allow you to carry it. Good Luck on what you decide on. |
