Newbilicious question about oiling

I have a cheap Hoppe's pistol cleaning kit that includes, of course, the lubricant oil. I tend to put a coating of this oil on the entire surface area of the inside and outside of slide... Is there ever a point where too much oil coating is too much, and even damaging? It's not like I slop it on there, but there's usually a good amount to the point where the gun is nice and wet looking.

Less is more! Too much oil will attract debris. I usually leave the rails a bit wet, but use a very thin coat (i.e. you can't see it) on the rest of the slide.

Same here. I'm still a newb, but from the experience of cleaning my P22 a few times, I'd say use only a minimal amount of oil. If you were storing the gun for awhile you might want to use a bit more, but otherwise it just makes a mess and invites powder and dirt to mingle with the oil.

Lots of good ones; I like this stuff - Mil-Comm - Extreme Performance Lubricants
Or this works well too - KG Metal Coatings and Lubricants

Break Free ( CLP ) all the time untill the Temps get 20 below or colder. Then all i use is Syn automatic transmission fluid. It stinks when it burns off the bbl. But i have never had any gun freeze up at 60 below.

White lithium works as good as the name brand stuff and is much cheaper, IMO.

I've been using Tetra Gun Grease for a couple of years now and am very happy with it, Mobil 1 is just fine for an oil. If it slides, grease it. If it spins, oil it.
