sights on XD-40

sorry to bother you guys with this but i just got back from the range with my new XD-40 and i was shooting severly to the left with it . I tried shooting another target and got the same result .So i tried to figure out how to adjust the rear sight , but no luck on a search here . So, how do you adjust the rear sight to help me move into a good center? First i need to know how to adjust it and then which direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have only shot this gun to see if it functions good but today is the first time i shot it to see the accuracy.

What type of sights do you have? I don't think that factory sights on a XD are ment to be adjustable.

Place the slide in a vise making sure to protect the finish on the slide. Tap the rear sight with a wooden dowl in the direction you need your shots to go. Try shooting from a rest (sand bag or some sort of rest) then adjust more or less on the rear sight.

utcop has it almost correct. If you want to move your point of impact to the right, tap your rear sight towards the left. You always move your rear sight in the direction opposite of where you want your bullet to hit.

Tap the rear sight in the direction you want your shots to go, tap the front sight in the opposite direction you want your shots to go. You will not have to move them too far to bring your POA and POI together. Like mentioned above, try shooting from a rest and adjust as needed, then shoot off hand and adjust as needed. Good Luck

EME has the right answer. In order to prove the concept, I drew an exaggerated example to show the geometric principles of sight adjustment.

Hope this helps.

Your example is flawed. If you leave the front sight alone and move the rear sight to the right, your point of impact will shift to the left.

Sorry to disagree on that subject. The rear sight is always moved in the direction of the way you want the shot to go.

These can be seen if you hold one finger of each hand in front of your eyes one behind the other as you would look at sights. Then move the rear finger to the right the front finger being the front of the gun has to move to the right to line up. Therefore the shot would move right due to the front of the bbl being moved to the right.

And i am a little confused on the adjustment position .At my range at work , the guy i think moves our rear sights on our Glocks in the same direction that we need to shoot at . I have my XD out right now trying to get this right in my head , but i am totally confused. thanks to all for the help so far. Any more ideas? I just want to make sure before i go hammering on my XD.
