Crap...Mag release spring is out = help

I was installing my extended mag release. The pin wasn't completely removed and everything was going well. But then I could get the pin back in. Thinking it was misaligned, I tried backing it out a little more, little more, then...oops - my spring fell out of the mag release area. Does anyone have advice on getting back in? Orientation? Help?

The easiest way to get it back in is to take a wire and make a slave pin. Once you have everything in place, push the slave out with the actual pin. The entire process is a PITA!

I haven't figured out the correct orientation of the spring though. It's got a long & short end. which goes where?

The spring has the little L shaped end and the other short sharp end.

Holy Crap...you guys were right! What a PITA!!!

With that said, many thanks for your help. Just in case someone else makes the same mistake, I sacrafice one of my cheap brass punches to make a slave pin (it was bent anyway). But geez, I gave up counting the number of attempts.

Here's a thread with a picture that I was looking for
Mag release catch/spring installation

After all that, I'm not sure I like the super-extended mag release (+ 0.2"). I'll leave it in for a bit...but dang, that's a lot longer than I thought. Hopefully I'll get used to it.

lol.

Glad the thread I started helped you. Did you use the method I did or did you use the slave pin like old school and the info in the other thread recommended?

I went with the slave pin method...not easy. That video warns over and over again...go slow, don't push it too far out...

Well, I'm getting pretty good at installing and uninstalling the release. I bought one that was +.200 long. No complaints on where I got. I got what I ordered. I found that my desire for the release to be easily accessible was a bit over estimated with respect to how much longer. But a friend of mine turned it down to +0.090 and I touched up the bluing (Blue Wonder kit that I had for doing a rifle)...and presto, it's great.

Great mod.
