I haven't bought one yet ....

I am planning to sell my Beretta 84F that I have been using for cc and was very impressed with the .40 cal XD but did not know whether to go with the compact (which I favor for obvious reasons ... size and power). I liked the way the Glock .40 (full size) shot and have not even shot the XD but found the grip much better. The salesman, said that the XD and Glock shot about the same but he was trying to talk me out of the compact. Is there a great deal of accuracy difference? The 84F takes some work to keep a decent pattern. His argument was that the size difference between the SC and the standard wasn't enough to sacrifice shooting comfort and accuracy. Any thoughts? Tomorrow I am planning to shoot a compact .40 XD at a local range (which they have) but believe it or not they don't have a full size to rent!!!

Try the compact

I was not comfortable with the short grip but wanted to try shooting the compact to see if it was manageable. The store I went to did not have the clip with the extention so could not feel how that might improve the feel. The range I am going tomorrow has the compact, hopefully with the extended magazine.

Your dealer is right. There is not enough significant size difference to justify a XD-SubCompact vs a XD-Service. I have fired both in 9mm and they are both good shooters. Not sure how harsh the SubCompact would be in .40. I do find a full size grip a bit more comfortable and in the ned they wil be more accurate due to longer barrel and sight radius. In addition the XD Service can use Don's Guide rod and Wolff springs making maintenance easier and less costly. If I was in the same boat tryign to decide whether to get a SubCompact or a Tactical to go with my XD Service. I now have the Service and Tactical and I doubt I wil ever buy the SubCompact, no use for it.

I have the 40 service and shoot it well.Went to the range a couple months ago and someone showed up with a 40 subcompact. It had a pearce ext grip on it and i was suprised with the accuracey.Off hand i couldnt shoot my service any better than the sub.He did say his wife didnt like the recoil of the sub but owned a 40 service and loved it.So if i were you i would look for rental guns in both and see which you like better.Oh yeah he did say the pearce ext grips were a must on the sc

Could I suggest GET BOTH? No really, it's only money right?

I can't help you with the XD40. I don't own one, and have never shot one.

I currently own an XD9-Service model, and and XD9-Subcompact. Both are WAY more comfortable (TO ME) than any Glock I own, or have shot. If your just going to get one, get the subcompact, you can always get the full size mag with grip sleeve (I have a couple, and they feel just like shooting the service), and then you'd have a smaller pistol should you ever decide to conceal. Also with the Pearce extension, you don't even notice the shortness of the grip.

I shoot my Service pretty well, but after a good break in period I seem to shoot my subcompact even better? I know it shouldn't be that way, but it is. It works for me though.

Well I went to the range ....

I took the Beretta .380 (84F) along to compare to the sub-compact. It may just be that the .40 cal is too much for my comfort level. Switching back and forth, I shot both equally well, the .40 patterned consistently to the left but the pattern was tight enough. The jump was of course much more pronounced on the .40 and recovery was much slower. I could fire the .380 quicker and slightly more accurately which leads me to believe that maybe the 9mm might be a better choice if I go with the XD. And, of course they didn't have a 9mm sub-compact to test. Call around and try again!!
