Need help deciding, 3" or 4"
2 questions:
Is the 3" XD a "pocket gun"? If it's too big for that, I'm thinking of getting a 4" instead for "under the waistband carry". Also, are XD values on current models expected to rise, even if changes are made to future models? Just wondering in case I decide to end up getting both the 3" and 4". I thought maybe a second gun could be an investment against the falling value of the dollar. Last edited by genxsis; 04-14-2008 at 01:04 PM. Reason: correcting mistakes |

XD Sub Compacts are not even close to being pocket guns. They are fantastic conceal carry guns however.
The XD Sub Compact is my favorite overall XD. It's accurate and fun at the range and conceals fantastically in a K&D Dakota, MTAC or Crossbreed type holster. It will disappear and you will hardly know you're wearing it.

You would have to have some big pockets! IMO the XD is too wide for pocket carry.

Entirely depends on how you carry. My brother has an XDSC 40 that conceals beautifully with a Com-Tac holster on his hip (4 o'clock). Where as I find I have to carry my XD Service 40 at either a canted 1 o'clock or a 5 or 6 o'clock position. Ofcourse, this is partially body typing (and possibly the holster I use - I'm only using a cheap Uncle Mike's) but partially due to the longer barrel causing the gun to rise up when I sit, as it hits my leg. Otherwise, they are both very easy to conceal, so it's whatever mores confortable to carry and use.

The compact and service models are excellent for concealed carry. As for an XD being a pocket gun I would say no. You cannot go wrong with either one.

I just purchased the XD9sc, and took it out to the rage for the first time. I was surprised to find I actually shot it just as good as my buddy's 4" XD-9, if not a little better. It was a little louder and had a bit more snap, but overall I'm glad I went with the sub-compact.

Thank you for the links! I was looking elsewhere (without success) to find the height of the gun. The printed catalog only tells the length. |

I suppose there are many different factors that you would have to consider (i.e. body size, type of cloths you wear, were you would like to carry, etc.) As for me, I have a glock 23 (compact size) that felt to big for my taste to carry. I bought a xd40 sc and I love how small and easily it can be concealed. You don't have to sacrifice to much comfort. As far as it being a pocket gun, it is not. However, it will fit in my loose pants pockets and could be concealed there.
I would recomend the subcompact for concealment, but again a lot depends on personal preference and other things. Hope this helps... Good luck!
