I have also seen cases where the finish was the only difference and my FFL said the guns were not qulaified. My FFL said that the EXACT manufacturer's model number must be on the paperwork and match EXACTLY the number on the qual list, or else the kali DOJ will kick it back. In most cases, guns with a different finish have a different model number.

That may not be what the statute says, that's what they did.

I definitely know the answer to that one:

If you buy ANY legal gun in kali, you can then modify it in any way short of making it full auto or putting a silencer on it: you can add a new top and even change the caliber. I had a complete .40 top end built for a 9mm gun I already owned and personally called the guys in sacramento to make sure it would be legal (it is)..... you can weld chrome plated tail fins on it, as long as the original receiver came from a gun that was either on the list or in kali legally by any other means.
