The complete guide to a polished breech port w/ pics

To start off you will need the following items:

-Breech Port
-Mothers metal polish in the white/red can
-400, 600, 800, 1000, 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper
-Finger nail buffer
-Polishing clothes
-Dremel w/ felt buffer tip or a whole lotta elbow grease
-Time and some patience

I wanted to do this to my gun because the black coating on the breech port was coming off already and looked very discusting. I also saw another forum members pictures and all his guns had a polished breech port. Being that my XD40 is Bi-Tone I know that it would look so much better with that polished breech port. So lets begin....

Step 1
- You need to field strip your gun and take out the parts you wish to polish. I just wanted to polish the breech port / barrel and the end spring. You could probably do this to your trigger as well, but I wouldnt touch it if you are not a gunsmith or know what your are doing.

Step 2
-Start off the lowest grit sandpaper (400) and being to sand off the coating on the breech port and end spring. In this step, you want to take off as much coating as you can.

Step 3
-Move up on the sandpaper to (600 or 800) and sand until you cant see and more coating. This is very important step. To obatain a nice shine you must remove all the coating.

Step 4
-Move up on the sandpaper again to the (1000 and 2000). At this time you want to sand dry with the 1000 grit. When you start to see a little shine move up to the 2000 grit and wet sand until you get a nice smooth finish. You want to take off as much scratches as you can. The less scratches the shiner it will be.

Step 5
-After getting my parts to a semi gloss finish. I used a nail buffer to smooth it out and it added to give it a little more shine. After which, I took out the dremel and some polishing compound. Using a felt wheel, I set the dremel to the lowest setting and buffed it till I couldnt buff it no more. Then I wiped with a clean cloth.

Step 6
-After cleaning the polishing compound off, I used the mothers metal polish to give it that mirror like finish.

Step 7
-After polishing. I hit the breech port and barrel up with some gun lube and reassemble the gun.

VIOLA! DONE!

BEFORE

AFTER

This whole procedure took me a couple of hours as I am a very picky person and wanted it to be far over par. Enjoy some on my gun porn
