Agreed, and the other reason besides muzzle damage is you don't want to push dirt/grime toward the action. This is more applicable to shotguns, but the principle is the same. Except with shotguns, the grime ends up in the forcing cone when you push the wrong way... XDs dont have forcing cones. Nevermind.

OTIS is good stuff, can't go wrong there.

My favorite quick and extremely effective solution is to take 50% Kroil Penetrating oil cleaning with 50% solvent like Butch's Bore or Hoppes#9.
Mix them 50/50, run it down your bore, brush it out, run a clean patch and you're through. Cleaned and oiled in one step. Go to MidwayUSA — Shooting Supplies, Reloading, Gunsmithing, Ammunition, Gun Parts & Rifle Scopes and read up on all the positive comments on Kroil Penetrating oil, GREAT stuff!

mineral spirits

Any one use mineral spirits to clean/strip off all the oil/grease from parts? Is it safe to use on the polymer or finish?

Has anyone used Nyoil and/or ny-grease on the slide/rails?
