I personally think it started on the .45 service since it has everything the military wanted in a new sidearm. Highcapacity, .45acp , able to fit multiple hand sizes, has a light rail and a manual safety. It also had to be able to have a threaded barrel for silencers but I don't think that would of been a problem for SA.
I think now they are marketing it towards agencies that require a manual safety or for the people that just are not satisfied a pistol is safe unless there is an on/off switch with a noticable "click". As long as they keep it as an option only or a seperate model I have no problems with it.I don't want one on there but I think its a good idea....I don't see Glock providing this option....yet. |

From what I understand (purchasing my XD 45 soon) the xd's already have enough safety with the trigger and grip safetys. if im going to get into a shoot out with some BG I want to have my already cocked gun, pullled out and firing soon as i get it to level. i dont want to have to worry about my thumb pushing some tightly wound metal clip which could get me killed because who knows how sticky those things are i might have to use my left hand to get it the hell out of the way.

I remember when airbags were a "option" in cars and people said, "Why do I need airbags when my car already has a seat beat". Now, you have no choice and you are safer for it.
The manual safety on XDs is currently an option. There is a reason why you are seeing them on so many guns; mostly 45ACP. Because the DoD had a contract and many were going for that contract. Even though the program with canceled the firearm makers spend millions on R&D and will only get a ROI by getting these gun in the market. In the end, we will have access to great designs and feature well before the DoD. OS
