Here's the deal...
I have been eyeing an XD 9mm Tactical for a while. At first I wasn't sure that I wanted a pistol without a manual safety, but have convinced myself that the grip safety in conjunction with the trigger safety is substantial. The XD is $463 delivered at Budsgunshop. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/32485 I was set until I saw that S&W is having a spring sale that is a $50 rebate on the M&P's and throwing in 2 mags also. http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/w...ectionId=10002 The M&P is $439 delivered at Buds. So for $380 I could get a M&P and have 3 mags. Great deal. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/37124 The problem is that the M&P has no safety to speak of, except for a drop safety and magazine safety. I don't think that I am comfortable with no safety. I don't know why they would build a gun with absolutely no safeties. I like the gun other than this. I would be using it for target shooting and home defense. Am I being too cautious putting all my doubt on no safety? Last edited by LeviSS; 02-18-2008 at 05:39 PM. |

The M&P is nice. I chose the none thumb safety mostly because in a defense situation, I did not want to have to think about using it. Having said that, those who practice a lot, would do that second nature. In regard to your being too concerned about a safety, that is a person issue. I can say that I am 100% comfortable with no thumb safety, its all in how you handle the firearm.

1. I'd never buy a gun because of a rebate 2. If I thought the M&P was a better gun I'd be on their forum 3. I'd get a 40 or a 45 4. One good thing about the M & P is that it doesn't have a safety! 5. XD has just the right amount of "don't accidentally kill your self" but don't get killed because you forgot the safety was on 6. I'd never buy a gun because it came with a rebate. Hell I won't take guns for FREE if I don't like and believe in them Good luck with your choice. Mick |

This is kinda like posting on a Ford forum, "Should I get a Mustang or a Camaro?"
Never buy something because it's got a rebate. IMO they offer a rebate because they don't think they can sell very many without some offer that is aimed at marketing-ignorant people. Hold both, shoot both, and see which one you think will make a better fit for you.

I recently bought my XD and was pretty much set on getting one but considered the M&P. After checking them out, the XD was just right for me. You just need to handle them and fire off a few rounds if possible and see which one fits you best. The price difference between the two doesn't seem worth it enough to be a deal breaker, and although I haven't dealt with S&W, getting most rebates can be a pain (I admit I know none of the details on their offer though).

I know I will be getting a slightly biased opinion, but many people on here own both and don't have a brand loyalty to only suggest the Springfield.
I am not considering it only because of the rebate. It has been considered before the rebate. I didn't like the lack of safety then, and I still don't care for it. I'm just looking for opinions, but am leaning toward the Springfield still. |

All I can say is that Springfield doesn't have to give rebates & free mags for people to want to buy an XD...

I agree with most of what was said - but of course I do have a confession.
I couldnt decide on any of the "popular kids" guns, so I have one (or two) of each: one XD (two springy 1911's) - two Glocks and two M&P's. If I had to only choose one it would be the XD - I can assure that. - T |
