14,000+ rounds through my XD9 Tactical, and the gun is still more accurate than I am.

I don't know for sure about the XD but I attended a Sig Armorers school several years ago that was taught by an active duty Navy Seal. He showed us documented proof of numerous 9MM 226s with over 1 million rounds through them. Sig at the time was recommending replacement at 10,000 rounds. You couldn't hardly tell there was any rifling left in the barrels but it still met the 4 inch at 25 yard accuracy standard. If the XD barrels are even close don't worry about. It's unlikely you will ever wear one out.

Assuming barrel life is 100,000 rounds and you shoot, on average, five boxes per month. It will be 33 years before you need to replace the barrel.

There is no way you can wear the hammer forged steel barrel by hand, with overcleaning it. This is the first time I hear of this. Not at least with the standard soft brush.

Funny I figured that you would decrease the life of the barrel by not cleaning it. In my (in no way professional) opinion I figured leaving all the lead and crud in there and then shooting it would wear the barrel more.

How are you guys cleaning your barrels?

Depends how you clean it. Running soaked patches through on a brass jag does no harm, but it leaves some residue in the corners of the grooves. Trying to get that out is usually where all the wear happens because people use wire brushes. That residue in the corners is what does not harm to shoot through. The passing bullet will push put anything in the way.

On the occasions I do want to clean the barrel shiny I use a nylon bore brush and a mild polish like auto chrome polish.

barrel makers have heard of it. If you use a nylon brush, you probably won't. Metal brushes can (even brass).

Certainly DO NOT ever use a stainless steel brush to clean out a barrel. The stainless bristles are much harder than the steel bore and the result will be to create deep scratches in the bore surface. When we use our IPSC pistols like sub-guns, as we often do, we apparently can raise the bore surface temperature up to the annealing range, based on the color I have seen on some barrel bore surfaces. Therefore, the bore surface of our barrels likely has been preferentially annealed, and could be quite a bit softer than the barrel outer surface would test. Even the brass/bronze brushes, which have bristles which are as hard as mild steel, or the lead removers, which use a hard brass mesh to scape the lead from the bore, may well be able to scatch the bore surface of a stainless steel barrel. Any scratching of the bore surface will naturally lead to increased bore surface wear, leading, and coppering. My recommendation would be to never use any kind of a bore brush to clean a 416 stainless steel pistol barrel, especially if it has been exposed to strings of rapid fire.
