They should at least take of the trigger safety, if they're going to put the dork thumb safety on it. Hey..................and then they could put an external hammer on it too!! You know, anything to make the 1911 guys comfortable, it's all about them.........

One good thing I can see coming of this the aftermarket coming up with an extended version of the thumb safety, almost like a thumb rest. This means you wouldnt have to use those dorky plastic thumb rests; this would be nice for us guys that tend to rest our thumbs on the slide stop...also a good idea for recoil control!

What no biometric finger scanner so only I can fire it. What a waste. I think the xd now has the most safeties ever made possible on a functioning firearm. I keep thinking of all those movies where you have to hit x,y,z button turn two keys at the same time and simultaneously press a button, to set off a rocket or such. I think the xd has too many safeties now.

Now get rid of that stupid articulated trigger and grip safety and it'll be perfect. I've been waiting for this, maybe I'll buy another one to replace the one I traded away.

As someone who is fairly new to guns, hey I am Canadian born and got to Texas as quickly as I could
I was fairly comfortable handling the guns at the range, but not nearly as comfortable with guns as many of you. The added safety makes the XD my top choice for the first gun I am going to put my hard earned cash down on. I've been to a gun show and tried the XD's in my hand and they feel great, and I have yet to read a real complaint about the function of the XD. I am also left handed, which in itself reduces the model choices, my other option was to get a 1911, but at about $300 (yeah, the GI is about the same price, but it does not have the ambi safety) or so more money it would mean a longer wait for the disposable money to get the gun. In a couple of months I may very well be saying, "I don't need no stink'n thumb safety", but for right now the small bit of added security allows me to get the gun I want now. Remember, we all have to start somewhere, as much as I would like start out handling the gun like a season marksman. Hate to say it, after this one I could see getting a SA1911 5" loaded, and a .40 sub compact XD. cheers, Tom |

manual safety prevents cycling the slide?
Thanks for the pics arjuna70. From the pictures, it looks like the slide has a small cut-out for the safety.
The cut-out would presume that the manual safety (when engaged) will stop the slide from cycling? This means that the manual safety will not allow you to clear the chamber without disengaging the safety. I like the idea of having a manual safety on the XD, but not where the safety of prevents movement of the slide. That defeats a majority of the reasons for having a manual safety IMHO. Being able to clear the chamber after daily carry with the manual safety engaged is one of the things I like about my HKs. |
