Tips on Home-Made Range?

Just bought a XD 45 and can't wait to put some rounds through it (other than the 50 I put through it at the shop where I bought it).

I have plenty of land in rural KY where I plan to do my shooting. However, I want to be as safe as possible so I don't have any ricochets or other safety hazards.

Any tips on how to set up a home made range?

I have heard that stacking tires on top of each other and filling with sand works pretty well. Any other thoughts?

plastic garbage cans full of sand?

i was watching a thing on green berets last night andf they were shooting into garbage cans full of clay.

you could always just buy some dirt and build a little 4'H X 12'L berm behind your targets.

what about bails of hay?

I'm going to strongly consider building and indoor range at some point...

First I would go on GoogleEarth and make SURE there is nothing around, I had to change my angle due to an unseen house. A 6ft thick wall of dirt will stop anything your likely to be shooting, a gravel bed to and from the berm will make it extra nice after a rain or during the spring and fall thaws. You no doubt have locals with bulldozers, have someone come over for a day and you'll have a nice wet/dry range for the cost of a case of ammo.

Trash can, good idea.

Bails of hay, in our area, are too valuable. We had a drought this year and there hasn't been enough hay grown.

I have a bulldozer actually. I'd rather not go so far as to tear up the ground, but As it turns out, I have plenty of different places where I could shoot into the hillside. I just wanted to see if I should put anything in front of the hillside to add an extra layer, or to catch the bullets, etc.. Plus, I'll need something to setup the targets on.

LOL.

OMG that's hilarious... reminds me of a thread I once saw...

someone asked how many bales of hay deep would a back stop have to be to stop a .223/5.56mm Nato round...

I think the answer was something like...

126,542.

tires are safe to shoot as long as they're not steel belted and have the rims removed.
