XD rough crowns

I was cleaning my XD yesterday and noticed the crown is EXTREMELY rough. It looks like they used a course burr to finish it. I checked my wife's and it's almost as bad. If I can get my camera to get it clear I'll post a picture. I'm not sure how if it's ruining accuracy, but it just bothers me. Anyone else notice this?

Here's a pic of my XD's crown. The red stuff in the barrel is not rust, it's copper fouling.

Not sure what you are calling "rough" can you post a pic. The one I posted seems good to me. What are you seeing?

It's fair to say we're all confused.

The only thing i can think of is that he is saying that the rifling is rough.
I would think it kinda needs to be to grab and put a good spin on the round.

My Crown...

is VERY nice! Ironically, my CZ 75 PreB (a non import bring back from an Army buddy) has a BAD looking crown, but it shoots VERY accurately - go figure. The crown in the pic looks pretty darn good, and WAAAAYYYYY better than my CZ!

If you feel the crown is rough, you may want to send the barrel to SA so they can review and recrown it for you. A rough crown could affect accuracy...

I can help you here: It's definitely not the crown. Unless there were huge machining errors or large chunks of metal that didn't get cleaned off, a rough crown would not have that great an effect on the flight of a .45ACP bullet to make it shoot noticeably left. The XD is no target pistol, there is no need for a perfect crown.

As for the rough crown on the OPs' gun, the usual way that I follow to correct this is to get a brass screw with a round head, put it in a drill, apply lapping compound to the head of the screw, and run the screw head against the barrel crown. The lapping compound will grind a new smooth crown. I don't know where you would get a brass screw large enough for the .45ACp barrel, but this is the DIY way to smooth a crown on rifles, using properly sized brass screws. There are also crown cutters available from Brownells and other sources, but when you see what they cost, you'll realize why many gunsmiths just use a brass screw and lapping compound unless there is a special request for a target crown of a certain angle.

If it was me, and there was a sharp edge I wanted to get rid of because it has cut my hand during cleaning or keeps snagging cleaning patches, etc., I'd just knock it down a little with a small file, just enough to remove the sharp edge, and no more.
