Recrowning

The folks I have conversed with on the CZ forum, who I trust greatly on gunsmith issues rail against DIY crown jobs - unless you have a jig, and really know how to use it. The crown in the last thing to touch the round and is the most critical part of the barrel that touches the round. If it is not even/square/etc. it will throw the round 'off'. A gunsmith can do the job in a few minutes, but I would leave it alone unless you KNOW it is the problem. Then, I'd see a smith.

I wish the macro mode on my camera worked better so I could post a close-up of it. Either way, I'll be cleaning it up in the lathe with lapping compound after I turn a brass burnish to fit. Thanks for the replies.

the crown is quite rough and will most assuredly effect accuracy. I build custom pistols and recrown all barrels -- including brand new ones as a matter of course. while you won't see any major difference under 10-12 yards, if you try shooting at 25-30 yards you should start too see accuracy break down at that range.

XDs are not known for being exceptionally accurate out of the box, so anything working against you just stacks the error a bit higher. My 1911s routinely shoot sub 1" at 25 yards. If I could get my XD to shoot 1 1/2 at that distance I would be happy.

Your saying the crown on my gun is very rough? Sorry but I don't see where it's rough. Can you point out the rough spots?

My Smith&Wessons, Rugers, and Charter Arms pistols have almost identical crowns.

I don't understand what the big deal is, it"s is a combat pistol if it's minute of pie plate at selfdefence ranges it's fine. If it were a match pistol or you couldn't get it on paper at 25m I could see an issue.

Not arguing accuracy just trying to get a definition of what "rough" is. The original post was meant go ask. Do all XD have such poorly finished crowns?

Crown Repair

The lapping compound will grind a new smooth crown. I don't know where you would get a brass screw large enough for the .45ACp barrel, but this is the DIY way to smooth a crown on rifles, using properly sized brass screws.
+1

I have used this bit of adivce several times on older mil surp rifles. Worked great on the last Mosin that had a bad gouge out of the crown from the cleaning rod being used the wrong way.

Getting your hands on a brass screw that is large enough for a .45 ACP would be hard.

I too don't see a problem with my crown either .

I was trying to get jarhead0369 (who started this thread) or BrokenXD (who also mentions have a very rough crown) to post a pic of the crowns on there XDs to see how rough they were compared to mine (which I thought was fine).
