Scuff marks on Recoil Spring Assembly

Hi, I just picked up a new XD 9mm subcompact and after firing about 300 rounds of Walmart ammo (100 round Value Pack) through it I noticed it occasions fails to extract the casings. It only does it when there are still rounds in the magazine. I initially blamed the malfunctions on my limp wristing (still trying to get used to the two thumbs forward grip), but while I was cleaning it, I found this scuffed up area about 1 inch by 1/4 inch on the recoil spring assembly. What is going on? Is there something wrong with my XD?

Not sure on the scuffs but Ive found you really get what you pay for with ammo. Ive been using Winchester white box in all my guns. Seems to be the best bang for the buck for me.

They look like normal wear markings. Same thing on my XD45 compact, no problems whatsoever...

Odd that it only happens when there are rounds in the magazine. The guide rod looks normal to me, but I'm looking at pictures and seeing in person may give a different perspective.

I suggest looking at the brass that has had problems ejecting for unusual extractor marks. If nothing jumps out at you try manually cycling a casing from the chamber slowly so you can get a good view of the process. Perhaps there is something unusual happening there..

By the way, other than one box of Winchester WB, I only use Blazer Brass when it comes to ball ammo. The WWB was due to Wally World being out of BB.

Looks like normal wear on the spring and rod. Do the FTEs happen with both mags? If not then more than likely one of the mags has the feed lips open to wide.

Thanks for all the replies. FTE only happened on one mag because I was only use one mag (got Pearce grip on it today). I will go to the range again tomorrow and get a 2nd opinion from the range/gun store, and also try different mag/ammo. Maybe I'm a little paraniod, but I've never seen wear (scuff marks) like this on rifles or pistols issued to me before, granted none of them were new when they were issued to me, but still, the scuff marks looked like some one took it and scraped against some rock. I guess if worst come to worst I will fall back to Springfield's warranty.

Got back from the range. The pistol shot fine, no malfunctions. Did a field strip and found another scuffed up area, similar in size as the previous one.

Again it's normal wear. If you don't want the gun to wear don't shoot it.
