Gun for son - XD 9mm or G19?
I will ask this on the Glock Talk forum also. Don't flame too bad - I just bought the XD 45 Compact - nice gun. (I even had the chance to get a G21SF for LE price).
I can get the G19 for $398. I am leaning that way, because of the price, lgith weight, and Glock rep and acessories available. But... the XD grip is nice. I'll actually pay more for the XD - what would you do? Thanks. |

when i first started looking into getting a 9mm, i faced the same choice, Glock 19 or XD9. The grip angle and the grip safety is what sold me on the XD. For a carry piece, the extra grip safety gives me >< that much more peace of mind, and the grip angle feels more like my Ruger 22/45, which fits me more comfortably. Either is a fine weapon, its the small things that sold me on the XD.

im a XD guy
May I ask where are you located. For 400.00 i would even want a G19. I am in KY. But for your son Glock has a great rep and many of my friends swear by them. I am a XD fan so I would say XD. It is a hard choice you are facing. Let me know where you are in a PM, for a FTF or if you would ship? thanks

I have fired both Glock and XD. I went with the XD because I liked it more. The XD just felt better. I'm sure you will get more people over here saying to go with the XD, because more people here went that way themselves. At the same time, you are going to get more people on Glock talk say, go with the Glock.
My suggestion would be that if the purchase is not a surprise for your son, take him to the range and rent one of each in the caliber that you'd like to get him and let him choose which one he is more comfortable with. If it is a surprise, maybe you could still take him to a range in the guise of the guys going out shooting, and find out which one he likes better, and go buy him that one. that's just my .02 cents on being sure to get the right one.

Since this is a flame free thread, don't overlook the CZ75 or Browning Hi-Power.

The GLOCK 19 is a fabulous compact 9mm pistol, anyone who says otherwise is simply misinformed. However, the XD9 is also a great pistol and well worth a close look. If you can get the G19 for $400 that seems like the way to go. I can't buy a used G19 for that around here.

OH, by the way, have you looked at the S&W M&P 9mm? I tried to force a G19 and a G26 on my wife but she decided on the M&P 9mm compact. She claims it fits her hands much better with the smallest grip option they offer with the gun.

What about this...
Rent both, and let him decide. Let him try both and ask him which one feels better. Maybe even see which one he is more accurate with. When I shot the glock, I was all over the target, with the XD, I had much tighter groups. Made a difference for me. If all else is equal, I'd go with the "instant equity". If that is a real good price for the Glock, buy it, and maybe sell it later. (I'm not checking prices on either, so I dunno)

the M&P is another good choice.... i would (again if its not going to be a surprise) as previously suggested see if you can find a place to shoot a glock, XD and M&P to see which he likes better. I did that.....and to be honest it didnt help a BIT; theyre all fine shooters and for me it came down to the fact i simply liked the XD the best for some intangible reason. i also felt that despite the size of the glock community and the fact that there exists a following for the M&P the people (both on this forum as well as the after market mfrs ive talked to) made the XD the right choice for me - even tho there ARE more glock parts, the people werent as professional, courteous, or knowledgeable about what they were selling.
