Leaning toward Glock
Read my 45 Compact posts. IN 45, I prefer the XD. But... I may have my son get the 19. I felt one in a showroom the other day, the that trigger was CRISP. The 19 feels OK in my sons hands. I will have him compare again, and see. I am TOO CHEAP to pay to shoot, AND pay to rent - would have to in my area. Besides - the guns are not THAT different, and both good values. My price point is SO good on the G19, and they are simpler and easier to work on. (If he eventually hates it, I'll at least break even on a sale). The only thing I don't like about my XD 45C is it is a bit complex - even the slide is complex. I DON'T expect to have to DO anything, so its OK. But, on the G19, I could help my son fix and play all day.

Between the Glock and XD, both are very good and highly dependable, no issues eating ammo for either. So have him hold or better yet shoot both. My money is on the XD. Size wise, the grip / point on the XD is IMHO better. I have an XD45, got it over a Glock for the same reason. Have been told over and over, get what feels best and the XD wins more often than not.

I think you are making an excellent choice in the G19. Utterly reliable and breaks down into 3 pieces for cleaning. Like you said, if he ends hating the pistol you should easily be able to recoup your money.

Thanks guys...
Its tough. IF the P01 came with a MANUAL safety like my other CZs, I'd steer him that way. But, I really like my XD 45 Compact. Articles like this: http://www.chucktaylorasaa.com/SpringfieldXD9.html make the XD sound sooo good, but I do think the G19 is so simple and like I said the price point for me is great. I do kinda like the thick rails and grip safety. Too bad the XD is so much more complex.
OTOH, the 45 was probably a good move. The size factor and grip on the XD is so good. Although, I wonder how I'll find the G30 SF? I did handle the 21SF, and while it felt pretty good, the XD felt better. Anyone discern a ral difference in shooting them as far as muzzle flip because of the supposedly higher bore axis of the XD? (In 9mm - G19 vs. XD9mm). |

He is 16...
He wants a 9mm. Of course, it will be 'mine' for a time. But he'll shoot it and take care of it.

Gotcha. 16 is a great age for a 9mm. Enough kick to be a "real" gun, but light enough to be fun and a high CDI factor.

Being 16 myself I have a XD9SC and When I went to look at guns it was between the M&P, GLOCK, or XD. I liked the feel of the XD more and the extra features it has. I liked the grip angle a hole lot better also. I ultimately chose the XD and I had no regrets.
With the glock because of the price it is probably a 1st generation without the rail or the finger grooves in the front of the grip. That will mean it has lower resale value and is not as wanted as the new 3rd generation models. 9mm is a great caliber for his age to start out with buts thats not the reason I got one. It was cheaper than my .357 to shoot so I could practice a lot more.

I just ordered my XD9 SC from Woodbury Outfitters for 399.99 plus 20 bucks shipping, after everything is said and done it will be about 100.00 cheaper than a glock, which you could put towards ammo or a tac light for him. Plus keep in mind that the xd has the supported barrel just in case he wants to eventually shoot +P.

I can get the G19 at LE price
and be out the door for $421. That is likely chaeper than the XD.
