Anybody have a Service Model and a subcompact?
Looking to buy a couple of sub-compacts in January. One each for my wife and I for our carry guns.
My wife currently shoots her HK P2000 in .40 S&W and controls it with no difficulty. She also shoots my 4" XD without a problem. Having never shot an XD sub-compact, I would like to know if it has significantly more recoil than the 4" guns. Should we consider stepping down to the 9mm for her carry gun? |

I don't think the difference is that big, but my 40SC was my first gun, so I guess I was already used to the little difference there might be.

If she can handle the 4" .40 she should be fine with the 3" .40. Any noticeable difference won't be enough that she couldn't handle, and I am sure she would get used to it quick.

My brother has the SC. I have the Service. When we go to the range, we regularly shoot both pistols. While I notice a difference in the SC, it's only minimal, and most of that (for me) comes from the fact he only uses the 9 round mags with a Pierce grip. The Pierce helps, but the gun still seems very short in my hand, and I have rather large hands.
But even with that, my groupings - with an occational stray round - tend to be on par with both weapons.

I have a XD40 SC and my wife shoots it better than the XD9 service and tactical. So I dont see any problems for your wife. My wife has really small hands and she loves the SC..

Thanks for the input guys. Guess that settles it. The .40 it is..................
I don't have a 9mm now and wasn't looking forward to adding a different cartridge to the arsenal. |

I don't notice a difference between my service and sub-compact .40's recoil wise. I am a little more accurate with the service though. My wife shoots both with no problems.

My fiancee shoots her XD-9 subbie without much effort or difficulty, and is an awesome shot w/ it!
I have both an XD-9 subbie and service. Recoil isn't much different, but the subbie has more "flip" to it since it's smaller. But it's totally controlable. Just have your wife shoot a 50BMG, and then muzzle flip and recoil in any handgun won't be a big deal to her anymore. (Yes, my fiancee can vouch for this). As for caliber, if she's used to the 40, why not stick with it?
