Noob loading question
All my other guns have been revolvers, and I just bought an XD40 (there is a Santa Claus!!). The owner's manual say that to load the gun, first insert an empty magazine, lock back the slide, eject the magazine, insert a full magazine, then release the slide lock. Is it ok to just insert a full magazine then cycle the slide (or not, if you don't want it chambered and cocked)?
Thanx in advance. |

Doing it the way the manual says just engages the slide stop easier. That's all. So, +1 with robinsre

I like to slam the magazine into it forcing the slide to close therefore cocking and chambering the first round and ready to fire.

I believe that's called a tactical reload in the mall ninja circles... haha. Anyway back to the OP, either way is fine. Usually to chamber the first round, I pull the slide back and engage the slide lock (without the empty mag), load a fully loaded mag into the gun, then release the slide lock. The method of loading a full mag into the gun then pulling the slide back and releasing it is called slingshotting or something like that. I usually don't do it because it doesn't always go all the way into battery when I let go of the slide, maybe I'm just weak, haha. But utilizing the slide lock method ensures that you're using the full force of the recoil spring to load the first round.

When I'm at the range, I actually release the slide stop BEFORE loading a full clip into it. I don't like having one in the chamber all the time, so when I'm about to start shooting, I rack the slide the old fashioned way and I'm ready to go!

I usually insert a full magazine then pull the slide back. I dont think I have ever seen any1 at a match walking around with a holsterd weapon in battery, nor have I ever seen a competitor place their gun in battery when the load and make ready command is given.
As far as plus 1 goes competitors usually have an extra mag. when the command to load an make ready is given they insert a spare mag, rack the slide striping one round into the chamber, dump the spare mag and insert another full one.

at the range for my first magazine, i lock the slide back, insert a full magazine, then i release the slide by pressing the slide lock button.
sometimes i manually rack the slide back by hand to drop the slide stop button and then let the slide fly forward.
