Question Questions on XD high cap .40 cal mags

Hi,

I am relatively new to the forum. I have an XD tactical .40 cal. I recently purchased extra magazines and the new magazines are different then the old ones. The old magazines have several witness holes (9 to be exact) the new ones only have three. When did they change and whats the difference with them.

my "high cap" mags have 9 witness holes for 12 rounds. my SC mags have 3 witness holes for 9 rounds.

Actually I believe your "new" magazine are actually the older style if the XD-40 hi-cap magazines. The 3-hole 12rd 40 magazine are actually a version that pre-dates the 9-hole versions. What most likely happened is who every you bought them from had some old stock on hand. My first XD-40 Service came with three of the 3-hole magazine. My XD-40 Tactical and all the later magazine I have purchase have been the 9-hole versions. They both work equally well, although I really miss the hole for 10th round on the 3-hole version when loading magazine for competition in L-10 division.

No offense intended... but who would want them comparatively speaking?

I'd take them if they are cheap enough. They work just as well, just don't have all the witness holes in the back. If you really want the extra holes I'm sure a drill press and a few minutes and that would fix that.

When loading mags for competition you should never use the witness holes. It can cause trouble. Magazines will invariably change shape over their lifespans and they will not always put the round in the same place. You might go one high or one low. That would be bad. Mine have been through several thousand rounds and the holes can no longer be trusted. I don't care because as long as they feed and lock the gun open when empty I am golden!
