Hi, I'm just starting into pistols and have some questions. I want a pistol for IPDA and maybe IPSC shooting as well as personal protection. I weigh the decision much more on fun shooting than protection though. I have been doing a lot of reading about XDs, Glocks, and M&Ps as well as competition. I have bought a Walther P22 to get started. I plan to get a 9mm because of cheaper ammo and IDPA doesn't penalize you for it.

So far I like the 4" XD the best except for the long creepy trigger and the fact that the barrel is higher than the glocks.

1. Is the longer trigger and higher barrel that big of a deal? Will I notice it much in IDPA shooting?

2. I like the olive drab XDs but am worried that the novelty might fade over time. For those that have gotten the colored XDs, have you regretted it or still like it?

Buy the pistol that feels the best when you hold it and point the sights. If you can reach the mag button and slide lock easily and comfortably. Then that’s the pistol for you. If money is not an option then go for the best looking one in your opinion.

I own 2 XD's and have owned 4 total. I also own a M&P. I love both. I might be a glock owner some day. All are great pistols and all have pros and cons.

Dont ever pick a pistol because "someone" says it is better. What you think is better is what matters. Im not saying ignore people advice. Just take it lightly and dont fully rely on it.

1. That can be fixed.
2. No, having all black guns can get old.

Best advise I can give is to go shoot both. Your local range will have guns you can rent for about $10 bucks. Try all shapes and sizes and find the one that was made for you, believe me there is one!

1. I'm not a competitive shooter, so I can't much help. I can tell you that, in my hands, the XD45 is a close second only to the USP45 in felt recoil, although to be completely honest, I've never shot a G21, and I've heard they were remarkably soft shooting for the round.

2. I have a Flat Earth, I think it's called, XD45, and yes, I do regret that I got it. What happened was that I went to the gun shop on an impulse buy type whim, intending to get an XD9 with the Melonite finish. They didn't have any, but they had an XD45. The only thing was, they didn't have a black framed one. I really wanted a black framed one.

I got the Flat Earth instead, and I regret it because it's such a good looking gun that I can't bring myself to shoot it half the time. I got it a few years ago, and I haven't done a round count, but I'd be amazed if I put over 200 rounds through it.

I also got an HK Mark 23, with their "Desert Tan" frame. Same story. Can't stand to shoot it.

On a side note, the frame design and feel on the XD45 and the Mark 23 are amazingly similar. Amazingly.

Go to a range that has rentals considering you already have a pistol (if they require bringing your own gun in.) Shoot a bunch of different types, Glock, Sig, XD, blah blah blah. Find the one you like most and buy it.
