New to the site and wanted to say hello! Also had a question for you guys. I took my new rifleto the range the other day, but decided to shoot my XD while I was there. I had three full magazines, two original and one new, full of Federal Hydra-Shok 230 grain. The box of ammo was less than six weeks old. This is my duty weapon and ammo that I had been carrying since it was issued to me, approx six weeks also. I know the range master and he told me to go ahead and shoot it up and he would replace it for me on the down low. Well I had three FTF in the new magazine, one in the second one, and two in the third magazine. After the first magazine I pulled it apart after clearing the weapon and checked to make sure that it was assembled correctly and it was. The rounds were getting the lower section of the hollow point stuck on the edge under the feed ramp.

After it jammed three more times in the next two magazines I took the trusty Kimber Carry II out of the case, qualified AGAIN, and switched duty weapons. Any ideas on why this was happening to me. All answers would be appreciated. Thanks alot for your time.

Some guns dont like certain types of ammo, even 2 xds that came right off the assembly line after each other....

My advice, try different ammo and or polish the feedramp.

Check for burs on the feed ramp, try feeding a different hollowpoint. Try feeding fmj and see if you get the same results. You have to rule the issue out, are you absolutely sure that you weren't possibly limp wristing?

yeah I am pretty sure that I wasn't limp wisting. I never have problems like that with any of the other handguns that I own. Also looked at the feed ramp and didn't notice or feel any burrs. When I went to my instructor school I shot 250 rounds of this exact same type of ammo and didn't have one problem. Is it possible that this box was just "bad", and try some more? When I shoot FMJ I can shoot straight through a case of ammo and not have any problems except for a slightly tender hand

Maybe have a good gunsmith have a look at it?

The XD's seem to have a reputation for high reliability without finikyness and I'd have to say my experience with mine bears that out. Never a hiccup yet (knock wood

).

Maybe there's something going on with yours as others have suggested, such as a burr in a bad spot or something along those lines.

Yes it is possible that you got a bad batch from Federal. It happens. I would do another test with the same type of ammo but different batch under the same conditions. See if you get anymore feed problems.

If you do, send the gun to SA. You should not get an FTF with premium top line ammo like Federal HydraShok. Don't forget to keep the cartridges that fail to feed so you can send them to SA and/or Federal for inspection. Both companies have a BIG interest in making sure that their products work properly together.

I had the same thing happen to me with 230g Hornady TAPs in my 45. I have the feedramp polished, but you can tell from looking at the way the bullet is designed how it could cause problems.

recommendations for defense ammo

I've run quite a few hydra-shoks through the gun along with various other JHPs and never had a single problem with any of the other brands.

As was suggested, run a bunch of ball through it and see if you see any more FTFs.

Since you said you shot 250 rounds of the same type of ammo during instructor school without a problem my bet is you just got a box of ammo with some bad rounds in it. If you still have those rounds I'd send them to Federal telling them what happened because they'll be able to do a thorough check on those rounds to figure out why the ftf and why they passed through quality.

Hollowpoints (by shape) are always going to be prone to this because instead of a nice round nose, the nose is flat with an open cavity that can catch on anything sharp or square.

Might have a gunsmith rework the feed ramp. If that doesn't do it, switch to a different type of ammo.
