When holstering my weapon, I grip the weapon with my middle, ring, and pinky finger as normal. My index finger rests along the frame, outside the trigger guard, and my thumb is vertical against the rear of the weapon on the striker indicator. This insures the web of my web is out of the grip safety, but that I have full control of the weapon.

They actually sell a manual safety for Glocks now.

But of course an XD is NOT a Glock.

cid...

I was thinking about this when I woke up this AM. I took my XD and did what you are suggesting and I thought to myself, "What if the gun fired right now?"

Kiss your thumb goodbye.

Why not just bring your thumb around under the beavertail but not contacting the safety and let it rest on top of your index finger? At least that way you have no risk of getting a busted thumb. My uncle broke his thumb three times on weapons by making similar mistakes. Kinda taught me to watch where the heck I put my thumb!! LOL!

Anyways just a thought. I do my reholsters differently so it doesn't really affect my process. But I would hate to see you end up like my poor uncle all busted up.

Never thought about it to tell you the truth. No more than I ever thought about holstering a 1911.

Just one thing to keep in mind. The operation of the trigger and grip safety do not have to be simultaneous. If the trigger gets caught up and activated by say your shirt as it is holstered the weapon will not fire immediately provided the grip safety is not activated; but if later you press the grip safety while the trigger remains stuck the weapon will fire.

So even though keeping the grip safety unactivated during holstering is a good idea you also need to check that your clothing is not caught in the weapon/holster before you touch the grip safety.

If you want to see what I mean UNLOAD your XD. Then depress the trigger without activating the grip safety. Then while still holding the trigger depressed, push in on the grip safety.

I just tried that, repeatedly, on my XD45 and was NOT able to get the weapon to fire. I had to completely let go of the trigger and then, when the trigger was squeezed again, the firing pin dropped (with the grip safety still depressed).

It would seem that either yours or mine is malfunctioning. If mine is, then I prefer it to keep malfunctioning in this manner.

Now I am really curious. Mine is the XD45 service and I just checked again. When I rack the slide with the weapon empty then press the trigger alone and hold it down then when I depress the grip safety the hammer drops.

I wonder if this really is different between different XDs???

I said yesterday I had never thought about it. Well, it turns out I do keep my hand off the grip safety too.
