I have practiced this as well because I can't think of very many situations where you should be in a HURRY to RE-holster. I keep clear of the grip safety as I holster. It also prevents the gun from being pushed out of battery while being pressed down into the holster.

Plenty of people have shot themselves when re-holstering with their finger off the trigger due to an obstruction in the holster not noticed. A stick, maybe a pen or even a thick shirt tail.

I think the issue is the rare instances where an edge or retention strap on the holster can catch the trigger. It has happened (apparently enough).

edit: Tard beat me to it. Never even thought about a piece of clothing.

Grip safety is a SAFETY. Don't deactivate it unless you have a reason to do so and you are preparing to discharge the weapon.

I don't ever push in on the grip safety unless I am firing. I hold the gun so that my hand is on or near the safety but not disengaging it.

Re-holstering the gun is a process you can take slowly. What is the hurry? I often hold the gun for reholstering with my hand completely off the back of the grip. I will hold the gun with thumb over and around the slide, index finger on the front of the trigger guard with my middle and 4th fingers on the bottom of the trigger guard and pinkie on the front of the grip. This helps guide the gun into the holster and none of the safeties can be disengaged this way. Works for me.

I know of a contractor in my local area who carries a Glock. He got home and went to un holster his gun and his shirt tail was stuck in the trigger guard, as he removed the gun from the holster, the shirt hung on the trigger, bang, shot himself in the leg. If I carried my XD in a holster daily I would certainly keep my hand off the grip safety.

The more cogent question would be, "Why have a grip safety?"

Because you can't fire the gun without putting two opposing forces on the gun... trigger pulling backward and grip safety pushing forward. The point is that you don't disengage a safety unless you really need and want to.

For exactly the reasons posted in the thread. The grip/trigger safety is the idea solution for someone who want to pick up the gun, pull the trigger and have it go boom, with no positive safety to deal with. While at the same time enjoys the benefits of making the weapon almost impossible to accidentally discharge without doing something really stupid. The chances of the trigger getting pulled and the grip safety being depressed at the same time by anything other than a human hand is far lower then the chance something will get wedged in the trigger guard and try and pull the trigger when you REALLY don't want it to.

I do the same. I try to avoid pressing the grip safety when possible.
