Proper Flashlight/Handgun Hold?
If you don't have an attached light on your XD/or handgun of your choice, what is the best way to hold a small flashlight, like a Mini-Mag, and also grip your handgun?

Flashlight method
I forget after whom it's named, but the most commonly taught method involves holding the light in your support hand with the rear of the light towards the thumb, the front parallel with the bore axis pointing down-range at the meaty portion of the palm on the pinky side. Bring the support hand wrist up under the firing hand wrist and bend the support hand up so the hands are back-to-back. Yes, it's not comfortable.
Ideally you want a flashlight with a tailcap on/off switch of some sort; twisting a flashlight on does nothing for light discipline. |

There are several different methods advocated.

That Valhalla video is pretty interesting. That would be a good time for sure.

I like neck index, but I have used Harries and the Surefire technique. All are good techniques you just need to practice them.

Thanks for pointing out the article I put in our newsletter. I try to simplify the techniques ... use the light to find & identify, use the firearm to deal with the threat.
We also had Mark Warren from Strategos Inernational out at Valhalla last spring. He and Vaughn Baker really put out good information on low light issues. Their curriculum has continued to progress, mature and refine itself over the years. I strongly recommend them for anyone loking for a multi-day course dedicated to integrating the flashlight with the firearm. -RJP |
