In CA, animal control is generally attached to the sheriff's dept. Some are sworn officers, some aren't. Even those that are not sworn carry something to put down injured animals, even if it is a rifle in the truck.

Don't worry. Your job's safe.
Much like many liberals don't believe anyone should have to work. Many animal rights groups don't believe that animals should have to work. Many shelters now will refuse to adopt out a pet for any other purpose than "companionship" Work dogs, ranching dogs, and hunting dogs are, in their mind "cruel" ways to treat an animal. They should live a life of luxury on your dime, just like anyone else that doesn't feel like getting off their ass apparently.
