Oh, no! First XD failures.

I have a few thousand rounds through my XD9 Service, and love it. A 100% gun, until today. I ran off 200 rounds of WWB. Two of those rounds resulted in failures to extract. I had cleaned the gun before the range session, so it was up to speed. FTE's mean locking the slide back, dropping the magazine, racking the slide to extract the brass, inserting the mag, and closing the slide. Whew. I'm not really looking for an explanation (unless someone has a great idea), just expressing my surprise. I still like the pistol a lot, but now there's a tiny bit of doubt. Hope it was ammo related!

I don't know, with a few thousand rounds
thru 'er, it could have a bit of dirt in or around
the extractor. Might want to do an extra good
job cleaning that area.

Although, early on with the HS2K, WWB was very
suspicious in the cause of FTEs.

I am assuming you are refering to the Winchester White Box these are the only rounds I have ever had a problem with. I thought I had a bad Clip but it works fine with everthing else and that was at least 1500 rounds ago. I use Blazer Brass now with no problems with some various others (Federal, UMC, Speer).

have you done a compleate strip of the gun? every 500 rounds or so i compleatly take it apart. on average i strip it all apart at least once a month not because its needed but because i like to take it apart and get every little bit of junk out and keep it working 100%. but i would say at the 1000 round mark it should be striped all the way down and cleaned super good

Question

My little XD-9 SC has an interesting failure mode. I assume it's my "you bought what?!" reloads, but still haven't fully verified it. (It refuses to fail with good ammunition .)

What'll happen is a failure to extract, which leaves the gun jammed. Slide open, last round about halfway out, and the next round at least partially up into the breech area.

If I do the normal drop, close, and rack, it jams up SOLID. I basically have to bash the thing apart with a cleaning rod down the barrel. (Hint: The extractor is probably working....)

If I lock the slide back (with the slide lock), drop the magazine, and then pop the offending round out with my finger, it's fine. (Put the mag back in and work the slide to continue agitating the target.)

This happened on the first outing. I found some tramp metal in the barrel later, during a more complete cleaning than I did before starting to shoot it. Of late, I don't find anything, although popping in a load of virgin factory rounds will work fine.

What seems to be happening is that some of these reloads are blessed with cases that are a little soft, and the residue from shooting the last few rounds gets between the case and the chamber wall, causing a solidly stuck case. Why it'll go halfway, I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that it's already fairly stuck before the thing's timing gets mucked up. (By then the fired case has been released by the extractor.)

If I could get it to fail with good ammunition, I'd be upset , but not with these reloads.

(UltraMax. They package both a white box and a well-logoed version. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that they tumble the cases in the pretty box loads. Checking the cases ahead of time doesn't show any problems that you can see or feel. I tried hand-fitting - just dropping live rounds into the chamber with the barrel removed from the gun, and seeing if any rounds would refuse to drop free given the opportunity. Out of fifty, I found about four that seemed to stick. Marked them and shot them. No problems. One of the others stuck....)

Regards,

Regards,

I had the same problem with factory reloaded ammo. Solution - stop using it.

I strongly recommend, if you take apart the rear of the slide, that you use a punch to take out the pin, and not a screwdriver.

I ended up having to drill out the pin because I managed to flare it inside the slide. Couldn't go out, couldn't go back...
